WLRA application is available at iTunes Store

Published: July 7, 2009.

A free iPhone App is now available for Lewis University’s radio station, WLRA 88.1 FM. Within seconds, mobile media users can download the free application “WLRA-FM” to the radio station that offers a traditional college radio mix of musical genres—ranging from the newest dimension in alternative, rock, reggae & calypso, rap, country, multi-cultural, talk, news and Lewis University sports.

The iTunes Store name of the application is “WLRA-FM Lewis University’s College Radio Station / 88.1 FM “The Start”. It offers mobile media users an alternative to commercial radio. Click here for a link to the iTunes Store and to download the application.

“This is another step in our convergence of media at Lewis University. This application gives our audience an option to tune into WLRA through mobile media,” commented John Carey, director of The Andrew Center for Electronic Media, Lewis University WLRA Radio and Television Network.

“WLRA and Lewis University have put the station on a par with all major broadcasters, and in many cases, the station has an advantage. The WLRA logo now resides on the iPhone desktop next to such iconic brands as The New York Times and Pandora - a significant achievement,” commented Paul Jacobs, general manger of Jacobs Media in Southfield, Mich.

The company partnered with Lewis University to develop an application solution for the station. “We work with a wide array of broadcasters, but as a company that has a long history with public radio and college-based radio stations, we believe in the mission of stations like WLRA,” added Jacobs.

WLRA joins a handful of other college radio stations around the nation with their own mobile media application. At the forefront industry trends, Lewis University’s WLRA Radio was the first college radio station in the country to become entirely digital and created the slogan, “Digital radio – press Start.” The state-of-the-art broadcasting studios and transmitters are located in The Andrew Center for Electronic Media on the Lewis University Romeoville campus. WLRA is already available through iTunes and it can be accessed online at www.lewisu.edu and www.shoutcast.com.

WLRA-FM went on the air in 1972 on the radio dial at 88.1 FM. It is a Federal Communications Commission licensed non-commercial educational radio station. WLRA is a student-run college radio station at Lewis University, playing the traditional college radio format in segmented time periods during the week. WLRA’s music formats range from alternative, rock, reggae & calypso, country, rap, multi-cultural, talk, news, and Lewis University sports.

In addition to WLRA being campus media, broadcasting to the region, and streaming worldwide, it is a lab for Radio/TV & Broadcast Journalism Communications students. The station is a member of the National Association of Broadcasters, Illinois Broadcaster's Association, and Broadcast Education Association. The station is licensed to and owned by Lewis University and serves the Chicago/greater Joliet region. Visit the WLRA website at http://www.wlraradio.com.

A Catholic university sponsored by the De La Salle Christian Brothers, Lewis offers nearly 80 undergraduate majors and programs of study, accelerated degree completion options for working adults, various aviation programs and 22 graduate programs in nine fields. The 10th largest private, not-for-profit university in Illinois is being honored for the fifth consecutive year by The Princeton Review and U.S. News & World Report.
