WLRA Radio Raises Funds to Benefit Hope Children’s Hospital

Published: December 7, 2007.

Lewis University's radio station, WLRA, held its semi-annual fundraiser entitled "To Kill A DJ" from November 5-11. A traditional event at Lewis, the fundraiser is dedicated toward raising money for Advocate Hope Children’s Hospital located in Oak Lawn.

The week-long event raised nearly $1,800 for the semester, only $300 less than last year’s grand total of $2,100 and more than halfway toward this year’s goal. Both Intro to Radio students and personalities of WLRA selected one six-hour slot each to host a radio show. All participants were required to raise a set amount in order to work toward a goal of $3,000-$3,500 total for the school year.

Under the supervision of John Carey, Director of Electronic Media, WLRA is run by a full student staff consisting of General Manager Thomas Graham, Production Manager Shannon Flanagan, Music Director Shannon Spector, Director of Technology Larry Linka, Operations and Programming Manager Bret Mega, News Director Katie Cryder, Sports Director Greg Warnimont and Promotions Director Zoey Mitronis. WLRA will continue its fundraising efforts in the spring semester during the month of March.

The first college radio station to go entirely digital from studio to transmitter, WLRA is located at 88.1 on the FM radio dial. Now celebrating 35 years of broadcasting, WLRA has hosted many events to benefit the surrounding community, including ongoing fundraisers for Advocate Hope Children’s Hospital and several projects to benefit agencies of the United Way of Will County.

Advocate Hope Children’s Hospital was the first children’s hospital to be built in the Chicago area in nearly 30 years when it opened in 1996. Located on the campus of Advocate Christ Medical Center, the facility has 45 private inpatient rooms, a 12-bed pediatric intensive care unit, and a seven-bed pediatric surgical heart unit. It is a major referral center in northern Illinois and Indiana for pediatric patients requiring the most advanced care. Hope Children’s Hospital is part of Advocate Health Care, which is recognized as a leading national health care network.
