Prison Education Students Join Lewis University Black August Celebration

Dialogue, artistic expression and community connection are the focus of Lewis University’s 3rd annual observance of Black August. A showcase led by Lewis University Prison Education Program (PEP) students, the Third Annual Black at Lewis Welcome Reception, and participation in the 2026 Joliet Black Joy Parade and City Square Celebration are scheduled to be held Aug. 26 and Aug. 29.

Established by incarcerated Black activists in the 1970s, Black August is a month dedicated to remembrance, political education, and reflection on the continuing pursuit of justice and liberation. This year's observance highlights the voices and experiences of Lewis University's Prison Education Program students through poetry, spoken word, artwork, and personal reflections.
Lewis University's Black August observance reflects the University's continuing commitment to belonging, educational opportunity, and community engagement while building bridges between the campus and the broader community through education, storytelling, and collective action.
