Lewis Men's Soccer Advances to NCAA Sweet Sixteen; Defeats UIS on PKs Sunday

The Lewis University men's soccer team advances to the NCAA DII Men's Soccer Tournament Sweet 16 as the Flyers defeated Illinois-Springfield in penalty kicks during the second round Sunday (Nov. 19) at Kiwanis Stadium.

HALF BREAKDOWN
FIRST HALF: Illinois-Springfield 0, Lewis 0
Asore wasted no time to start the contest as he drove the field and looked to make it 1-0 but his shot was saved. Illinois-Springfield tried to score a goal in the fifth minute but Doppelhofer was able to record the save.
UIS recorded the next two scoring opportunities for both teams in the 20th and 23rd minutes after going on the attack but Doppelhofer saved both shots. Bogers tried to put the Flyers on the board at 40:05 but his shot went high.
SECOND HALF: Illinois-Springfield 0, Lewis 0
The Prairie Stars came out of the second half with the first three shot attempts but Doppelhofer saved one and the other two were off target. UIS recorded another pair of shot attempts in the 65th and 67th minutes but none found the back of the net.
OVERTIME: Illinois-Springfield 0, Lewis 0
UIS recorded a pair of shots in the opening overtime period but both were off target. Arturs Gorodnickis (Riga, Latvia/Riga) looked to break the scoreless tie to start the second overtime but his shot went out right.
Asore created some space, looking to score a goal for the lead, and fired off a shot attempt in the 107th minute but UIS' goalie saved it.
