Over 1,000 Graduates Honored at Lewis University May Commencement Ceremonies

Lewis University celebrated May Commencement ceremonies for more than 1,000 students on May 6-7 on the universityís campus in Romeoville.

The festivities began Friday, with the Graduate Degree Ceremony, which honored†more than 350 students receiving doctoral degrees, certificates of advanced study, and masterís degrees, as well as graduates of adult accelerated programs. Fredrick Gandy and Shannon Lynn Hamm received a doctor of education. Ashley Renae Lisek received a doctor of nursing practice.

The Morning Undergraduate Degree Ceremony honored more than 380 College of Aviation, Science and Technology, College of Business, College of Humanities, Fine Arts and Communications, and School of Graduate, Professional and Continuing Education degree recipients.

Screenwriter, actress, director, producer of Cinderella, Pitch Perfect film series, 30 Rock, and New Girl Kay Cannon í96, B.A., í99, M.A.,†received an honorary doctorate degree and addressed the graduates. Cannon is a three-time Emmy nominee and the recipient of three Writers Guild of America (WGA) awards and a Peabody for her work on NBCís 30 Rock. She also wrote the Pitch Perfect franchise, which has grossed over $500 million worldwide. She made her feature film directorial debut with the hit comedy Blockers. She most recently wrote and directed the modern musical Cinderella, a bold reimagining of the story we grew up with, which launched on Amazon and became the number one streamed movie in America and the No. 1 soundtrack on iTunes.

Cannon got her start at such venerable comedic training grounds as ImprovOlympic, ComedySportz Chicago and Second City. There she met Tina Fey, who gave Cannon her first job as a writer on 30 Rock.

Also during the ceremony, Juan Pablo Chavira was recognized with the Father Aquinas Colgan Award for his transformation while earning a bachelorís degree in physics. Loralei Elizabeth Summers offered the Lasallian Address, sharing insights on the University Mission values of Knowledge and Association. Summers earned a bachelorís degree in biology.

The Afternoon Undergraduate Degree Ceremony honored 275 College Education and Social Sciences as well as College of Nursing and Health Sciences degree recipients.
