Lewis University Finishes as Top Team in Illinois in DOE Cybersecurity Competition

Published: November 18, 2021.

Lewis University computer science and cybersecurity students finished as the top team in Illinois and 10th overall the 120 schools at the November 12-13 Department of Energy Cyberforce Competition.

The annual competition engages students from hundreds of schools in an emergency cybersecurity scenario in which one of the nation's critical infrastructures comes under attack. The students work for two days fortifying systems that are supposed to keep the infrastructure running against a variety of attacks. They also have to document their systems and its protections, a very important aspect of all cybersecurity work.

Jorge Campos of Chicago, Aiden Fifer of new Lenox, Nicolas Formella of Lockport, Ethan Justice of Romeoville, Jocelyn Murray of Wakefield, Mass., and Ryan Syed of Romeoville had to work for two days fortifying systems that are supposed to keep the infrastructure running against a variety of attacks. They also have to document their systems and its protections, a very important aspect of all cybersecurity work.

The six Lewis University students were coached by Dr. Jason Perry, assistant professor of computer science. They are also part of the Lewis University Cyber Defense Club, which meets weekly throughout the school year to sharpen their skills as future cybersecurity professionals.
