New Solar Array Powers Lewis University

Published: April 27, 2021.

Lewis University officially dedicated its new 1-Megawatt solar array on April 27 at its Romeoville Campus. The 2,612 panels across five acres of land are now supplying the 410-acre campus with up to 7 percent of its power.

“As a Catholic university and leader in sustainability education, research and operations, we’re excited to begin this renewable energy project that augments our commitment to being good stewards of God’s creation,” said Dr. David Livingston, president of Lewis University.

This project will help provide transformative experiences for Lewis University students as they learn and live in the solar-powered space. Electrical engineering, computer science and environmental science students are expected to gain valuable field experience as they have access to the solar array to learn the operations of the system and conduct research.

“We are truly appreciative of Lewis University Board of Trustees Member Dr. Sarode Pundaleeka for his generous contribution to this project and Pivot Energy for its role in installing these panels,” added Livingston.

On April 27, the Lewis University community gathered to dedicate the solar array in honor of Brother James Gaffney, FSC, president emeritus of Lewis University. During his leadership of the university, he oversaw numerous sustainability initiatives and earned the university many honors for its environmental friendliness.

Speakers during the dedication ceremony included Jacob DeMarais, associate director of University Ministry and coordinator of Ministry Service, Father Dennis Lewandowski, university chaplain, Dr. David Livingston, president, Dr. Sarode Pundaleeka, board member and donor, Brother James Gaffney, FSC, president emeritus, and Caitlin Shanahan, student.

Lewis University is an innovative and forward-thinking Catholic university offering market-relevant undergraduate and graduate programs to 6,300 students. Sponsored by the De La Salle Christian Brothers, Lewis University is nationally recognized for preparing intellectually engaged, ethically grounded, globally connected and socially responsible graduates.
