Grant Engages Women in Computer Science Field

Published: September 29, 2017.

In the last three years, the Lewis University’s Department of Computer and Mathematical Sciences has increased the number of newly enrolled female students in Computer Science program by 150 percent. This significant increase is attributed to a three-year partnership with the National Center for Women and Information Technology as part of its Extension Services for Undergraduate Programs effort.

The NCWIT program is designed to increase the number of high-quality opportunities for women to pursue careers in information technology and computer science.

Under the leadership of Dr. Cindy Howard, associate professor, CaMS hosted the NCWIT Awards for Aspirations program, attended by 150 female high school students interested in computing. Dr. Amanda Harsy, assistant professor, and Dr. Dana Dominiak, associate professor, also contributed numerous hours to this effort that lead to an increase of female computer science majors by 44 percent.

“There is really no good excuse why this should be a male-dominated field, “commented Dr. Ray Klump, chair and professor of CaMs. “The history of Computer Science has included a number of very powerful women who have helped shaped the field,” he continued, “We need to make sure increasingly more women join the computer science work force because it will improve the quality of what we ultimately produce.”

Lewis University offers a bachelor’s degree in Computer Science and Computer Engineering, with concentrations in Cyber Security, Web and Mobile Development, Data Science, and Video Game Development. It also offers minors in Computer Science, Cyber Security Science, Data Science, and Web and Mobile Application Development. At the graduate level, it offers a nationally recognized Master of Science in Information Security program, which includes an innovative fast-track that enables students to earn both a bachelor’s and a master’s degree in five years. A master's degree in Data Science and Master of Science in Computer Science are also available.
