Lasallian Speaker Addresses Fellow Graduates at May Commencement

“I believe that we as Lasallians here at Lewis have a unique responsibility to support those that are poor or oppressed” said Amanda Patenoude as she offered the Lasallian Address during the May 21 Lewis University Undergraduate Commencement Ceremony.

Each Commencement, one graduating senior is chosen to deliver the address, a speech that reflects the principles that guide the University’s Mission as they relate to the speaker’s personal life. It also recognizes the values of diversity, social justice, and service to the poor.

“This world is filled with people from different backgrounds and there is so much to learn from those that are different than us,” stated Patenoude, who received her bachelor’s degree in elementary education. The Cicero resident continued, “As a future teacher, this diversity brings life and learning to the classroom.”

Patenoude reminded the Lewis University graduates that they are not alone as they take on post-graduation responsibility. The National Honor Society member said, “In whichever road we take after graduation, the standards and ideals to support those less fortunate have been ingrained in who we are and we should reflect this in life after Lewis.”

Consistent with Lasallian values, Patenoude volunteered as a student at SOS Children’s Village, Berwyn North 98 School District, and MorningStar Mission. “Giving back to those in need made me value what I have in my life and gave me great personal happiness to help someone less fortunate,“ she said.

Leadership roles were plentiful for Patenoude’s college years. She was treasurer for Gamma Phi Omega International Sorority, and a member of the Student Council, Freshman Mentor Program, Teachers of Tomorrow, and Phi Alpha Theta.
