Published: February 4, 2019.

Dr. Mark Schultz will be the featured speaker at the Romeoville Black History Celebration from 10 a.m.- 5 p.m. Feb. 16 at the Romeoville Recreation Center.

The Lewis University History Professor and African-American history scholar will share from his first book, “The Rural Face of White Supremacy: Beyond Jim Crow,” which was designated an Editor’s Choice by The Atlantic Monthly. This study examines the daily experience of life under Jim Crow, the degree of freedom and unfreedom that African Americans experienced after the end of slavery, and the ambiguous ways that black and white people interacted as neighbors. The study was drawn from hundreds of interviews with black and white residents of one Georgia County.

Dr. Schultz will also touch on his current research on a forthcoming book which describes the history of African American farm ownership, which Schultz believes were the foundation of the black middle class. To register, call the Romeoville Branch of White Oak Library at (815) 552-4230.
