The Lewis University community gathered September 27 to dedicate the Brother James Gaffney, FSC Student Center at its Romeoville campus.

“This Student Center will serve as the hub of campus activity. We hope our new Student Center generates enthusiasm and energy while also providing good memories of student life to our future alumni,” said Joe Falese ’78, ’84, senior vice president of Student Services.

The 26,000 square-foot building features an expansive new dining hall with a wide variety of food options, a convenience store and café, offices for campus organizations, gaming area and open access space to relax, gather and build community. Offices for Student Activities and Multicultural Student Services, the Cultural Center, meeting rooms for student organizations and the Student Senate are located in the building designed and constructed by Wight & Company.

“It’s truly a capstone project in the overall campus master plan that is among the more than 30 new or renewed structures on campus over many years,” commented Brother James Gaffney, FSC, president emeritus of Lewis University. “For me personally, it is truly an honor to be associated with anything at Lewis University that is connected to the students of past, present and future.”

Brother James Gaffney, FSC, president emeritus of Lewis University, served the University in many capacities, including as provincial of the Chicago District of the Brothers of the Christian Schools, as chairperson of the Lewis University Board of Trustees, as professor of Religious Studies, and most notably, as president of Lewis University from 1988 - 2016. Throughout his remarkable 28-year tenure as the University’s ninth president, he played an extraordinary role in the development of Lewis University through a renewed and revitalized institutional commitment to Mission; the growth and quality of academic programs; the advancement of student success initiatives; significant growth in enrollment; the physical transformation of the campus and the development of regional sites; and leadership in the surrounding community.

“So much learning happens outside the classroom. We’re grateful to all those that made this addition to our campus community possible,” said Dr. David Livingston, president of Lewis University.
