Published: December 18, 2017.

Lewis University student Dominica McNair of Plainfield received the Father Aquinas Colgan Award during the university’s Undergraduate Commencement ceremonies held December 17 at the Romeoville Main Campus.

This special recognition is awarded to a graduating senior during the university’s undergraduate Commencement Ceremonies held in May and December. It is the oldest recognition in university history.

The Criminal Justice degree recipient plans to become a juvenile probation officer. She commented, “In life, I strive to not only be successful but also to be a positive influence on others like many Lewis University staff members have been to me.”

McNair appeared on Dean’s List multiple times during her studies at Lewis University while engaging in extracurricular activities, such as the Lewis University Cheerleading team and volunteer work. She said, “After four years, not only have I learned a tremendous amount of knowledge and wisdom in the classroom, but I also have learned how to carry myself with confidence.”

In between studying, she found time to volunteer at the Warren Sharpe Community Center in Joliet, Feed My Starving Children in Aurora, Hessed House in Aurora, Pillars Social Services in LaGrange Park and River Valley Justice Center in Joliet.

Students are nominated for the Father Aquinas Colgan Award by university faculty and staff. To be eligible for nomination, a student must be an undergraduate who has qualified for graduation, who is a four-year student of Lewis University with a minimum GPA of 3.0, and who has demonstrated exemplary personal, intellectual and social development in the spirit of Lewis University’s Mission.
