Lewis Men's and Women's Volleyball Teams Earn AVCA Team Academic Award

Published: August 2, 2017.

The American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) announced on Monday (July 24) that both the Lewis University men's and women's volleyball teams have earned the AVCA Team Academic Award for the 2016-17 school year.

The award, which was initiated in the 1992-93 academic year, honors collegiate and high school volleyball teams that displayed excellence in the classroom during the school year by maintaining at least a 3.30 cumulative team grade-point average on a 4.0 scale or a 4.10 cumulative team GPA on a 5.0 scale.

Women's Volleyball checked in with a 3.42 cumulative GPA, while the men's squad registered a 3.35.

"The guys did a great job of balancing school and athletics (this year)," Lewis head men's volleyball coach Dan Friend said. "I'm proud of their ability to excel in both areas and represent what we want our student athletes to strive for."

"This award shows how much dedication a team puts into their academics," Lewis head women's volleyball coach Lorelee Smith said. "I am very proud to coach a group of young women that care equally about success both on and off the court."

This is the eighth consecutive season that the women have earned the award, while the men picked up the honor for the first time since 2014.
