 CLASSROOM PLAN

  • Fall semester begins Aug. 31. The fall semester will follow the same beginning and end dates for 16-week and 8-week classes. Courses will follow the same weekly schedule of time and dates.
  • Classrooms are set-up with seating arrangements designed to follow social distancing.
  • Labs, Flight hours and other experiential courses will meet in person with modified schedules.
  • Undergraduate students will complete the fall semester in an online format after Thanksgiving Day.
  • There will be no Fall Break.
  • We are committed to offering in person, face to face classes, as well as hybrid models and online formats.

 UNDERSTANDING CHANGES TO YOUR FALL 2020 CLASS SCHEDULE

In preparation for the Fall 2020 term, we have modified the course schedule with your health and safety as our highest priority.  For this reason, you are encouraged to log in and review your schedule prior to the start of the semester. Fall schedules may include four (4) course types:

  1. Fully In-Person (also referred to as a Face-to-face or F2F class and always meets in person)
  2. Blended Course (also referred to as hybrid and meets both online and in-person)
  3. Fully Online Synchronously (online and will meet at a designated time)
  4. Fully Online Asynchronously (online with no scheduled meeting times)

As you look at your schedule these courses would appear as follows:

Fully In-Person: One row showing meeting information with a campus of “Romeoville” and the usual day/times listed:

Blended Courses – Online & In-Person: These courses will appear with multiple lines for the online component and the in-person meeting times.  These courses will list “Romeoville” as the campus.  One day of the week will show the in-person room, day and time.  The other line will indicate the online meeting times, in which students will join the online class at the designated time.  When meeting online, the location will appear as “Online Meeting”.

Fully Online Synchronously: Will have “Online” listed for Campus, but will have meeting days and times listed, with a location of TBA.

Class Formats at Lewis University Fall 2020

As a Catholic University in the Lasallian tradition, academic excellence and supportive teaching are core elements of a Lewis education. Whatever class format you enroll in, faculty will personally interact with you to create an engaging and informative experience. With our extensive experience utilizing learning technology, we have developed a class schedule for the fall semester with an emphasis on health, safety and your success.

What types of classes will be offered in Fall 2020?

Traditional
Lab and experiential courses will meet entirely in a face-to-face format on campus. Supporting information and tutorials may be posted online and assignments may be turned in online. These courses are labeled as either lecture, experiential, or lab in the course schedule.

Blended
Blended classes meet in both a face-to-face format as well as online. Students will have a scheduled, weekly, face-to-face, class meeting on campus, with the remainder of the content delivered online. The online content could be delivered synchronously (all students logon together on the same days and time) or asynchronously (each student accesses on their own time).


Synchronous Online Course
Synchronous courses meet at regularly scheduled days and times with all students logging on at the same time. Class attendance and participation is required similar to a face-to-face traditional course. Interactive assignments and group work will also take place online.

Asynchronous Online Course
Asynchronous courses do not have regularly scheduled meeting times. Students work independently on weekly assignments and interactive activities. Optional online office hours or group meeting times may be scheduled.


 CLASSROM PREPARATION AND PROCEDURES LETTER

Dear Lewis Student:

As we head into the fall semester, you should be aware of the preparations and changes on campus that facilitate the parts of the Lewis educational experience that will be face-to-face instruction.  In our preparations, we have followed the guidance of  the Centers for Disease Control, the Illinois Department of Public Health, and the Illinois Board of Higher Education.  And, we have listened to faculty and students about the best and safest way to have a meaningful and effective learning experience. 

Building and Classroom Preparations

  • Classrooms will be cleaned and disinfected daily; common areas, touchpoints, and restrooms will be cleaned frequently throughout the day. 

  • We have made HVAC System enhancements that include longer run times to bring in more outside air and the installation of more efficient air filters.

  • Disposable face coverings will be available for those who forget or lose their personal face coverings. 

  • To enhance the learning environment, microphones, projectors, and screens have been installed in larger classrooms.

  • Signage will be posted throughout campus to reinforce physical distancing, healthy hygiene, the use of face coverings, and other health and safety measures.

  • Directional signage will be posted to provide guidance for moving safely through corridors, stairwells, entrances and exits.

  • Building furniture has been removed from common areas to promote physical distancing.

Procedures for General Use Classrooms
The following procedures will set the foundation for class meetings in general use classrooms during the Fall 2020 Semester.  Classrooms designed for specific disciplines and learning experiences will be conducted according to approved plans that follow health and safety guidelines.

Face coverings will be worn at all times in University hallways, classrooms, and other common areas, including the classroom.  Faculty are empowered to reinforce the proper use of face coverings, and should direct students to obtain a disposable face mask at a designated area. 

No eating or drinking will be permitted during class, because face coverings must not be removed, even partially, during class.

The class meeting process will be as follows:

  • If a class is still in session in the classroom when students arrive, students should wait outside of the classroom, following physical distancing guidelines and signage, until all students and the professor have exited the classroom. 

  • For classrooms with two doors, one will be marked “Enter” and the other “Exit.”  Students and faculty should use the appropriate doors to create a smooth transition between classes.  If a classroom has one door, that door will serve as both entrance and exit.

  • When students and faculty enter the classroom, they will use the Lewis App to scan a QR code to register their presence in the classroom.  A secondary QR code will be posted in the classroom, in case a student or faculty member does not remember to scan upon entrance.  Tracking who is present in each classroom will:
    • Enable contact tracing, if a positive case of COVID-19 is identified. 
    • Help identify an increase in absences across the institution, which could signal the existence of community spread.
  • Furniture in the classroom is configured to create space for physical distancing.
    • In most cases, furniture has not been removed from classrooms.  You may notice that there are fewer chairs, but the tables remain, because they enhance distancing.
    • Furniture must stay in place and may not be moved by students or faculty.
    • Spaces where students are permitted to sit will be labeled with small signs that read “A” and “B.”
  • After entering the classroom, faculty will go to the front of the room and consult a list of classes that will identify whether students in the specific class should sit at spaces labeled “A” or “B.”

  • Rooms will not be cleaned between every class meeting.  Students and faculty should sanitize their spaces for individual class meetings.

  • Students should sit in the same place during each class meeting and must not move to other chairs or tables during class.
    • Faculty are required to record where students sit and keep a seating chart that may be used for contact tracing
    • It is recommended that faculty enable students to sit according to their preferences (within the guidelines above) on the first day of class and then inform students they will sit in the same place at each class meeting.
  • The faculty member will remain at the front of the classroom, unless the room is large enough to allow for movement while maintaining physical distancing.  In smaller rooms, a line on the floor demarcates the faculty member’s space.

  • At the end of class, students and faculty should exit the classroom while maintaining distancing.    The last person out of the classroom should signal that the new class can enter to enhance distancing and prevent crowding.

  • Turnover between classes should be as efficient as possible.  Any one-on-one conversations between faculty and students after class must take place outside of the classroom.

We realize these changes to class meetings are a departure from the familiar norms of college classrooms. We understand this will create challenges for students and faculty alike, but given our collective commitment to our students, class meetings will remain meaningful and engaging.

 ONLINE LEARNING TOOLS AND ACCESS TO TECHNOLOGY

As a Catholic University in the Lasallian tradition, academic excellence and exceptional teaching are essential elements of a Lewis education and the student experience. Classes taught online are learning communities that mirror the classroom-based learning, in which faculty interact regularly with students to create an engaging online experience.  Lewis has been offering online courses since 2009, and many of our faculty have considerable experience teaching in this format.  Our faculty are experts in their fields who believe in student-centered teaching and recognize each students’ unique experiences and abilities.  They work with colleagues across the University (on campus and virtually) to provide academic support, excellent advising, and other forms of assistance to ensure that students are successful.

What online learning tools will be available to support my classes?

Blackboard is our primary online learning management system used to support face-to-face classes and deliver all online instruction. Blackboard contains a variety of state-of-the-art tools that enhance learning and make it especially engaging. It allows students to work in groups, collaborate on projects, create blogs and journals, have online discussions, turn in assignments and take quizzes and exams.
Other technologies utilized include:

  • Zoom or Collaborate for online class meetings.
  • Voice Thread to post comments orally.
  • Panopto to create high quality video presentations.

What if I am new to online learning or have challenges accessing technology?

Lewis is committed to inclusivity and student success. Because of the challenges created by the pandemic, we will ensure access to online learning for all students, including training and support, academic accommodations, as well access to software and hardware.

Lewis offers instructional tutorials on Blackboard including the software tolls within it. The Center for Academic Success and Enrichment (CASE) and the Office of Technology offers support for students who need training on how to utilize any of these tools. Laptops and assistance gaining access to the internet are also available to any student facing challenges obtaining access to the technology necessary to complete courses.

What are the benefits to online learning?

Online learning provides many benefits beyond convenience and flexibility. You will learn a variety of skills that will be beneficial to you in an increasingly technological world. Online learning fosters:

  • Excellent written communication skills and proficiency in web conferencing.
  • Time management.
  • Personal motivation and self-directed learning.
  • Collaboration and teamwork.
  • Critical thinking and problem solving skills.
  • Technological literacy.

 HEALTH, SAFETY, AND SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY ORIENTATION FOR STUDENTS

Before Monday, August 31, all students are expected to read and sign the Flyers Promise and Student Acknowledgement of COVID-19 Information and Protocols for Fall 2020.  


 ACADEMIC SUPPORT

  • Academic Services is offering a range of academic support resources this semester, including online peer-to-peer tutoring, virtual academic coaching and advising, virtual Blackboard support and virtual walk-in support every Wednesday.  STUDENT ACTIVITIES

  • First-year students will live according to their academic area of study.
  • Cornerstone first-year experience will have class sessions/activities during Welcome Week.
  • Download the LewisU app to stay connected on events, student organizations, dining and more.
  • Student programming and resources will be posted on the Lewis website.
  • Face-to-face programming will follow CDC guidelines.

 RECREATION, FITNESS & WELLNESS

  • Traditional/familiar programs/events will be delivered in a variety of delivery modes this fall, including in-person, streaming and TikTok.
  • Our goal is to develop engaging, community building activities.
  • Intramural Sports will happen following the latest social distancing guidelines and in conjunction with the National Intramural and Recreational Sports Association (NIRSA).

  • The Weight Room and Powerhouse Gym will be configured following safe social distancing guidelines.
  • A Student Activities Fair is being planned for the fall to give students the opportunity to learn about all of the student clubs and organizations.

 INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS

  • International students living on campus feel safe and secure. They should be able to live on campus for the entire year following health guidelines.
  • Orientation for new students is scheduled to take place virtually on Aug. 26.
  • Sodexo is working on providing food according to cultural and dietary needs.
  • A peer mentorship program has been developed to help students adjust to their new community.
  • We will follow national and local guidelines for incoming international students, in addition to international Immigration Assistance, and will communicate with each student in advance of their arrival to the U.S. on appropriate protocols.
  • All incoming international students will be asked to purchase medical insurance.

 STUDY ABROAD

  • Fall study abroad programs are cancelled. Spring 2021 programs are planned, but subject to change based on health and safety and travel restrictions.
  • The Lewis University Rome Program at LUCE is scheduled. We are working with our Lasallian network of universities here, going into our fourth year.
  • Alternative study abroad and travel study planning may take place in other formats such as videoconferencing.

  • The summer and fall VA Certifications are being followed in conjunction with the Student Veteran Coronavirus Response Act of 2020.
  • A peer mentorship program is working to help answer questions on military educational benefits.
  • The Student Veterans of America Chapter has been moved to a virtual chapter.
  • The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs provides employment opportunities for Interns at Lewis.
  • Financial benefits are also being provided to those in need through the Veterans Emergency Relief Fund.
  • Lewis has approximately 500 total military veterans, dependents, reservists and active duty students.
