Lewis' concentration in Public History will prepare you for graduate school and a career as a public historian.

Public historians provide an essential service to our society - the study and preservation of heritage. As a Public History major, you will prepare to work in this growing field - through local and regional history museums, government archives and national heritage sites, in roles including:

  • Historic preservation
  • Museum curatorship
  • Archival science
  • Oral history
  • Historic writing

Hands-on Experience

Our very own Lewis University Howard and Lois Adelmann Regional History Collection will provide you with an up-close-and-personal view of the work of public historians. This special collection , located in the Lewis Library, preserves the maps, photographs and other materials that document the creation of the Illinois & Michigan Canal . Through this on-campus opportunity and others, along with internships and workshops with other regional sites, historical artifacts and written works, you will be well prepared to help preserve our past and better inform our future.
