Pledge

As a Lewis University student, I am expected to incorporate the values from our mission -knowledge, fidelity, wisdom, justice, and association- in the decisions I make every day.  As part of my promise to Lewis University, I pledge to promote responsible stewardship of our environment and limited resources by incorporating some or all of the follRecyclingowing practices in my everyday life:

  • Attending lectures, seminars, and classes to learn about environmental preservation topics.
  • Conserving energy by turning down thermostats, turning off lights and using compact fluorescent light bulbs.
  • Drinking tap water instead of bottled water when possible.
  • Joining College sponsored programs and groups devoted to sustainability
  • Reducing waste by using a reusable mug and water bottle, taking my own bags to the grocery store, donating used clothes and furniture to charity groups or others who can use them.
  • Think before I print or photocopy, and using the double-sided setting when I print.
  • Recycling plastic, paper, glass, aluminum and cardboard, etc.
  • Minimizing auto travel and walking or riding my bike whenever possible.
  • Unplugging electronics and chargers from the wall when not in use.

April 20th, 2012- Earth Day Initiative

The Lewis University Environment and Energy Conservation Council will be sponsoring an Earth Day event this spring. We will be clearing out Buckthorn (an invasive plant species) from the nature trail here on campus. We welcome the help of any and all volunteers. The event will be held from 2pm-5pm on April 20, 2012. President Brother James Gaffney, FSC, is planning on being in attendance to help celebrate the event. We had a similar event last year and it was a great success. We are looking forward to another great turnout. All attendees will receive a free t-shirt and all the proper safety equipment.

April 27th, 2012- Arbor Day Initiative

A week after our Earth Day event the UEECC will also be sponsoring a tree planting event to celebrate Arbor Day. From 2pm-4pm on April 27, 2012 we will be planting an assortment of native trees back into the nature trail where the invasive Buckthorn has been removed. Again we welcome any and all volunteers. President Brother James Gaffney, FSC, is also planning to be in attendance for this event.

Results of America Recycles Day 2011

On Tuesday, November 15, Lewis University celebrated America Recycles Day. The event was sponsored by the UEECC (University Environment and Energy Conservation Council) and Waste Management. This event was registered with americarecyclesday.org, which provided us with promotional posters, banners, pencils, and pledge cards. With these pledge cards, a recycling pledge drive was held in Charlie's Place. A table was set up by the entrance and was filled with informational material to help educate students, faculty, and staff on what Lewis University is doing to reduce its carbon footprint.

A display of sustainable features showed projects already implemented on campus, as well as information on what individuals on campus can do in their everyday lives to help the cause. Another poster provided information on what can be recycled on campus as opposed to what cannot be recycled on campus. The main focus of the America Recycles Day event was to persuade people to sign the pledge cards that asked people to commit to learning about recycling options in their communities, as well as to recycle a new material (something they had not already been recycling) within the month. The pledge drive turned out to be a success; 110 people visited the informational table and took the recycling pledge. Thanks to the UEECC, we were able to give away t-shirts to everyone that took the time to visit our table and sign the pledge. Waste Management also provided us with free key chain giveaways. Overall, the event was successful and it seemed to raise awareness on campus by showing some of the things that Lewis is doing to become more sustainable.

Arbor Day 2011

We also celebrated Arbor Day a week after Earth Day.  On Wednesday April 27th we planted a number of trees around the new science building construction area.  A lot of trees had to be removed from the construction site in order to make the innovative science building a reality.  Once some of the construction was pushed back we planted trees back in that area.  This was a great volunteer opportunity and will be much appreciated by everyone that drives on this campus.
