A credential file is made up of documents maintained for current students or alumni in the field of education. It is an established job search tool that is used to support your application for employment.
To set up a credential file, submit the items listed below to the Career Services secretary. For assistance with creating your file or writing your resume, please schedule an appointment with one of our career counselors. Remember to bring a typed rough draft of your resume to your appointment. (Information and handouts on how to write a resume are available in the Career Services Office.) The staff member will meet with you to finalize your resume and assist you with completing your credential file.
A completed credential file consists of the following items only. No other materials are necessary.
Please retain the original copies of your documents in your personal file. We will make duplicates of your originals to submit to prospective employers. Periodically visit Career Services to review your credential file and update pertinent documents that are no longer applicable to your current job search (i.e. update your resume, letters of recommendation, certification records, etc.). Ideally, your letters of recommendation should be no older than three years. You are responsible for setting up and maintaining a quality credential file.
Unless an employer requests your credential file, do not have your file sent to them. The employment process varies among school districts; therefore, it is essential for you to adhere to each employer’s specialized application procedures and not overwhelm them with unsolicited documents/credentials. For example, some districts may not require your credential file during the initial stages of the application process, while others may consider it a necessity prior to any consideration of your candidacy.
There is no fee to have your credential file copied and mailed to the institution/district(s) of your choice. To submit a credential file request, please complete the attached form and submit it to our office either in person, via fax or traditional mail. Your credential file request will be processed within 2 business days. Please note: We are unable to process any credential file requests without your written consent. Your written consent must bear your signature and student identification number.
Credential files are kept active for 5 years. You will be notified at the end of the 5-year period and may reactivate your file at that time. Files that are not reactivated will be purged, or you may request that your file be sent to you.
