Guaranteed med-school seats open for Lewis Biology students

Guaranteed med-school seats are open to Lewis University Biology students

Published: March 10, 2014.

Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine (LECOM) recently began an early acceptance program with Lewis University. The program offers Lewis University students an opportunity to receive a provisional letter of acceptance to medical, pharmacy or dental school.

“We’re the only university in Illinois to enter into this dual acceptance program with LECOM. It’s a unique opportunity for high school students that want to become medical doctors, pharmacists and dentists,” commented Dr. Jennifer Roberts, director of Pre-Health Professions at Lewis University.

The agreement provides dual acceptance for high school students that are accepted into Lewis University and meet the following criteria:

  • Minimum GPA of 3.5 and SAT above 1170 or ACT higher than 26.
  • Apply by December of senior year of high school
  • Complete an on-site interview in spring
  • Maintain a 3.4 GPA at Lewis University
  • Take required exams, such as MCAT, PCAT, DAT, and receive required scores
  • Complete a LECOM application
  • Transition to LECOM after undergraduate year 2, 3, or 4 depending on program.

The program also has opportunities for current Lewis University students if they meet certain criteria.

Roberts pointed out that this agreement is especially advantageous for those desiring medical, pharmacy or dental school. She noted the competition is fierce for admittance into the programs. For example, American Medical/Osteopathic programs saw an all-time applicant high last year. Two-thirds of those applying didn’t get admitted. For Osteopathic Programs in particular, there were 16,457 applicants for 5,577 seats.

Lewis University’s Biology degree program provides pre-professional preparation that ensures future success, with a very specific set of pre-requisite courses required by every Health Professions program. Pre-Health Professions programs available at Lewis University include: Pre-Chiropractic, Pre-Dentistry, Pre-Medicine, Pre-Occupational Therapy, Pre-Optometry, Pre-Pharmacy, Pre-Podiatry, Pre-Physician Assistant, Pre-Physical Therapy and Pre-Veterinary Medicine.
