Lewis Softball stands fourth in country in NFCA All-Academic team rankings

The National Fastpitch Coaches Association announced on Friday (Sept. 20) that the Lewis University softball team has cracked the top five in the country in grade point average, as George DiMatteo's Flyers have the fourth-highest cumulative GPA in Division II according to the 2013 NFCA Top 10 All-Academic Team rankings.

The Flyers are checking in with a 3.59 cumulative GPA for the 2012-13 school year.

"This is a tremendous academic achievement for the softball program," DiMatteo said. "I am extremely proud of my team and the players who made this happen."

In all, Lewis had 16 out of 25 players on their 2013 roster qualify as NFCA Scholar-Athletes with a 3.5 GPA, including:

  • Alexis Funk (Dyer, Ind./Marian Catholic)

  • Jayme Hefler (Glen Ellyn, Ill./Glenbard West)

  • Bianca Garcia (Elmwood Park, Ill./Elmwood Park)

  • Michelle Vucsko (Chicago, Ill./Marist)

  • Michelle Ginn (Petaluma, Calif./Casa Grande)

  • Kelly Bowler (Lockport, Ill./Lockport)

  • Kimmy Teats (Erie, Ill./Erie-Prophetstown)

  • Phoebe Conner (Munster, Ind./Munster)

  • Lauren Hanford (Morris, Ill./Morris)

  • Gianna Coduti (Melrose Park, Ill./Trinity)

  • Alexis Munaco (Bloomingdale, Ill./Lake Park)

  • Carissa Ramirez (Crestwood, Ill./Bremen)

  • Frankie Castagna (Chicago, Ill./De La Salle)

  • Courtney Makowski (Naperville, Ill./Benet Academy)

  • Ali Brems (Kenosha, Wis./Harborside)

  • Stephanie Tomazin (Bartlett, Ill./Bartlett)

    Lewis hosts its annual Alumni Game on Saturday (Sept. 28) at the Lewis Softball Field. First pitch is slated for 4 PM.
