|Lewis University BA Social Work program earns accreditation

The Lewis University Baccalaureate Social Work program has been awarded Initial Accreditation through June 2017 by the Council on Social Work Education’s Commission on Accreditation. The Council for Higher Education Accreditation recognizes CSWE as the sole accrediting agency for social work education in the United States.
Brother James Gaffney, FSC, President, commented that the program is clearly infused with the Catholic and Lasallian values that are the core of the Lewis University Mission, along with the standards of the CSWE and the National Association of Social Workers (NASW) Code of Ethics.
Dr. Stephany Schlachter, Provost, noted that achievement of accreditation for the Social Work program indicates the Lewis Community’s dedication to academic excellence in all teaching and learning.
The Department of Social Work at Lewis University offers a Bachelor of Arts degree program that seeks to educate generalist practice social workers who exhibit integrity and follow ethical principles. Supported by the university’s Catholic and Lasallian heritage, social work students at Lewis University are offered an education that is dedicated to advancing social and economic justice and the well-being and quality of life of individuals, groups, and families in urban and suburban communities.
Lewis University Social Work students are expected to know and respect diversity, respond to context, think critically, understand and utilize research, and are committed to the pursuit of life-long learning and professional development. According to CSWE’s mission, “accredited social work programs promote and strengthen the quality of social work education through preparation of competent social work professionals by providing national leadership and a forum for collective action.” The accreditation certifies that the program meets professional standards to prepare students for employment and graduate school.
