Restorative justice is the theme of Fall 2012 Lewis University Teach-In

Lewis University will host its Fall 2012 Teach-In titled, “Restorative Justice” on Oct. 24-26. Open to the public and free of charge, all 14 sessions of the conference will be held in the Sancta Alberta Chapel located at the university’s main campus in Romeoville. Sessions will be presented by eclectic and knowledgeable speakers who will offer various perspectives on restorative justice.
This year’s Teach-In Conference addresses the origins, purposes, and practice of restorative justice. Speakers will address various factors that play a role in restoring justice including past and present events.
Sessions on Oct. 24:
9 a.m. – "Foundations of Restorative/Transformative Justice" presented by Dr. Christie Billups, assistant professor of theology
11 a.m. – "The Function of Forensic Social Work in Restorative Justice" presented by Dr. Billie Terrell of the Forensic Social Work Department at University of St. Francis in Joliet
12 p.m. – "Discussion of the New Jim Crow" presented by Dr. Tennille Allen, assistant professor of sociology and Dr. Nancy Workman, professor of English
Sessions on Oct. 25:
9:30 a.m. – "Voices in the Wilderness: To Counter Terror, Build Justice" presented by Kathy Kelly, activist and peacemaker
11 a.m. – "Agape Missions: One-Stop Shop for Re-entry" presented by Jill Skole, executive director of Agape Missions
12:30 p.m. – "Envisioning a World Without Prisons" presented by Lewis Wallace from the Chicago Prison Industrial Teaching Complex
2 p.m. – "Restorative Justice in Schools" panel comprised of Sr. Donna Liette, Jonathan Little and llana Zafran from the Precious Blood Ministry of Reconciliation
3:30 p.m. – "A Restorative Approach to Conflict and Violence" panel moderated by Fr. David Kelly, C.P.P.S.
Sessions on Oct. 26:
9 a.m. – "Current Trends in Restorative Justice" presented by Dr. Carl Stauffer from the Graduate Center of Justice and Peacebuilding at Eastern Mennonite University
10 a.m. – "Remembering Without Revenge" presented by Dr. Carl Stauffer from the Graduate Center of Justice and Peacebuilding at Eastern Mennonite University
11 a.m. – "Emotional Availability of Women Inmates and Their Children" presented by Reverend Karen Hutt, minister in the Area Jails and Prison Society
12 p.m. – "Doing Time, Doing Vipassana" presented by Dr. Christie Billups, assistant professor of theology
1 p.m. – "Story from Corrections: Restoring the System" presented by Al White, adjunct professor at Lewis University
2 p.m. – “Strong Woman”: A Stillpoint Theatre Performance presented by various professions in criminal/social justice, social work, political science, education and health
The Teach-In Series is being presented as a part of Lewis University’s Arts & Ideas Program, providing cultural and educational programming for students and the community.
