ASPA Awards The Flyer Newspaper First Place for General Excellence

Published: May 7, 2018.

The print edition of the Lewis University’s student-run newspaper, The Flyer, was recognized by the American Scholastic Press Association (ASPA) with a first-place award for general excellence.

The Flyer editors earned the award in the “Colleges/Universities Enrollment of 2,501+ Students” category. The publication was judged by educators who evaluated the writing, content, layout, design and photography of two complete issues. Student editors’ efforts were evaluated in six categories: content, page design, general plan, artwork/illustrations, editing and creativity.

ASPA judges commended the Lewis University student editors for their efforts. “You have an excellent school newspaper, which shows the creativity and journalistic knowledge of your editors, reporters, writers, photographers, designers, advertising manager and advisor,” said the ASPA judges in their letter to the newspaper staff.

Competing newspapers were evaluated on a rubric totaling 1,000 possible points. The Flyer earned a perfect score in the page design category and near perfect scores in the content, artwork/illustrations and creativity categories.

“Our student editors commit themselves to creating a publication that serves as a voice for fellow students,” said Lisa O’Toole, adviser to the print edition and assistant professor of communication. “This award is affirmation for the editors as they complete another academic year of quality publishing.”

Including this award, The Flyer earned a total of seven awards this academic year from national organizations.

The Flyer reports news and provides a forum for the discussion of issues relevant to the Lewis University community through a biweekly print edition and an online counterpart www.thelewisflyer.com.
