The Illinois Board of Higher Education named Nanci Reiland, assistant professor of nursing and health professions and coordinator of continuing education at Lewis University, a 2018 Nurse Educator Fellowship Award recipient.

“It is a great honor to be recognized first by Lewis University’s College of Nursing administration for the nomination and then by the IBHE for the fellowship award,” said Reiland, who will be using the funds of the fellowship to complete her scholarly project regarding providers’ use of self-management goals in primary care settings.

Reiland plans on attending several national public health conferences, while also obtaining her Doctorate of Nursing Practice during the next semester. In addition, part of the funds will also be used to support the cost of professional organization membership

“Having opportunities to network and collaborate with public health professionals around the nation, and the world, allows me to bring back real-life experiences and opportunities for my students to engage in. I am always inspired by introducing students to the impact they can have on health—not just in hospitals, but in communities and even their own families,” Reiland commented.

The Nurse Educator Fellowship program promotes the retention of well-qualified nursing faculty at institutions of higher education that award nursing degrees. The fellowship supplements the recipients’ salaries and helps to defray professional development and continuing education expenses.

“I have been teaching health promotion and community health for the undergraduate students at Lewis for over 12 years. I first came to Lewis over 15 years ago to help out occasionally in the health center. I fell in love with the campus, the people and the mission and decided to start my masters here. Having come from lifelong Catholic education I feel blessed to be able to continue learning and teaching here,” Reiland said.

Reiland earned a BSN degree from St. Mary's College in Notre Dame, Ind. and master’s degree in Nursing Education from Lewis University. She is currently working on her Doctorate of Nursing Practice at Lewis University.
