ASPA Honors The Flyer Newspaper as First for General Excellence

The print edition of The Flyer student newspaper has earned a first-place award for general excellence from the American Scholastic Press Association.

Judges from the College Point, N.Y. organization reviewed two complete issues from the fall 2016 semester and provided a detailed assessment of the newspaper’s page design, graphics and illustrations, photography, headlines and writing. The Flyer earned near perfect scores in content coverage, page design, art/illustrations and editing.

The evaluation process is meticulous as ASPA judges use a comprehensive rubric consisting of six sections and 38 sub categories. According to the ASPA judges, The Flyer staff publishes an excellent newspaper, “which shows the creativity of editors, reporters, photographers, layout/graphic designers and adviser.”

Lisa O’Toole, faculty adviser for the print edition of The Flyer student newspaper, applauds the accomplishments of student editors.

“Our editorial staff consists of full time students who carry up to 18 credit hours each semester while contributing wholeheartedly to the success of the newspaper,” said O’Toole. This first-place award is further recognition of their efforts and commitment to providing news to the university community.”

Staff members for the print edition of The Flyer are: Georgi Presecky, editor-in-chief; Bree Scott, co-news editor; Samantha Carlson, co-news editor; Kate O’Hagan, tempo editor; Leah Laskowski, assistant tempo editor; Julia Mach, campus culture co-editor; Rae Powell, campus culture co-editor; Ashley McCann, opinions editor; Joyce Balash, sports editor; Robert Leveille, assistant sports editor; Michael Lane, copy editor; Jake Johnson, copy editor; Erin Patrick, copy editor and social media editor: Kayla Chambers, layout editor, Kamila Rincon, layout editor; Meaghan Glavac, layout editor David Olsen, photo editor: and Andrea Jauregui, advertising/graphics editor. Elizabeth Hyland serves as the web designer for The Flyer.

Lisa O’Toole, assistant professor of communications is the adviser of the print edition while Hayley Miller, assistant professor of communications, is the adviser for the online version of The Flyer.

The Flyer reports news and provides a forum for the discussion of issues relevant to the Lewis University community through a biweekly print medium and its online counterpart www.thelewisflyer.com. Its editorial staff consists of students from a variety of academic majors who publish the newspaper in a manner consistent with the Lasallian mission of Lewis University and the accepted norms of American journalism.
