Lewis University held a groundbreaking ceremony on Thursday, April 22 to mark the beginning of construction for a new co-ed residence hall to be located on the south side of the University's main campus. The ceremony was held at the future site of the building, just south of De La Salle Hall.
The construction of this $5 million residence hall is the first step in the University’s plans to create a residential village of six or seven new residence halls over the next 10-12 years. Each would house approximately 100 students, with the very first of these buildings anticipated to open in the fall of 2005, and the second anticipated for the fall of 2006.
“Given the 23 percent increase in freshmen last fall and the very encouraging enrollment prospects for future years, the University is proceeding with these plans as part of its ongoing commitment to its students and the community,” said Brother James Gaffney, FSC, President of Lewis University. The residential population is anticipated to grow to 1,500 students by 2010, at which time the total undergraduate and graduate enrollment is expected to increase from the current 4,500 to approximately 7,000.
Current plans call for the first of these residence halls to be approximately 27,500 total square feet and to include three floors of apartment-style living space. Each floor will consist of single and double occupancy rooms, a study/conference area, a lounge area, laundry facilities, and a kitchen. The first floor will also include a game room and will offer an expanded kitchen facility.
This new building will be the tenth residence hall on campus. Groundbreaking for North Hall, the last residence hall to be built on the Lewis campus, took place in January of 1997. It houses approximately 170 students. The current capacity of Lewis’ existing residence halls is 925.
