The NCAA announced on Tuesday (March 4) that the No. 23 Lewis University men's track and field team will send four student-athletes to compete in five different events at the upcoming NCAA Division II Indoor Track and Field Championships.
Lewis' qualifiers include sophomores Adam Barr (Oak Forest, Ill./Oak Forest), Isaac Jean-Paul (Gurnee, Ill./Warren), Matt Jemilo (Tinley Park, Ill./Tinley Park) and junior Andrew McLain (Fort Wayne, Ind./Homestead). This is the most indoor national qualifiers for a Lewis team since the 2007 squad sent seven student-athletes to compete in five events, including a relay.
"This group has a shot at being a top 10 team at the national meet," Lewis head men's track and field coach Dana Schwarting said. "Everyone is ready to compete for an All-America award."
The championships will be held on March 14-15 at Winston-Salem State's JDL Fast Track in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Heat sheets will be available on Monday (March 10).
Barr will compete in the weight throw where he earned the school-record with a second-place toss of 62'5 3/4" (19.04m) at the Great Lakes Valey Conference Indoor Championships last weekend. That toss puts him ninth overall in the Midwest Region and 13th in the country.
Jean-Paul dominated in the high jump at the GLVC Championships where he posted a school-record and NCAA Automatic qualifying leap of 7'1 1/2" (2.17m). That is the best in the Midwest Region and the second-best in Division II.
Jemilo qualified in the 800-meter run with a time of 1:52.81 set at the Chicagoland Championships on February 15th. That is the fifth-fastest time in the Midwest Region and 11th in the nation.
For the second-straight year, McLain qualified in both the 3,000-meter and 5,000-meter run. As a sophomore, McLain earned All-America honors in the 5,000-meter run and narrowly missed picking up another All-America award in the 3,000-meter run. McLain's top 3,000-meter time of 8:23.56 this season puts him fourth in the Midwest Region and 18th overall. His top 5,000-meter showing of 14:31.20 is also the fourth-fastest in the region and 11th in the country.
