Hanford, Hefler and Vucsko named to division softball team

Lewis' Hanford, Hefler and Vucsko named to All-GLVC East Division Softball First Team

The Great Lakes Valley Conference announced on Thursday (May 2) that Lewis University seniors Lauren Hanford (Morris, Ill./Morris), Jayme Hefler (Glen Ellyn, Ill./Glenbard West) and Michelle Vucsko (Chicago, Ill./Marist) have each been named to the All-GLVC East Division First Team at the 2013 GLVC Softball Championship Tournament Awards Reception.

Hanford, the reigning GLVC Player of the Week, earned one of the three outfield spots on the first team after batting .328 with a career-high four home runs, 12 doubles and 36 RBI for her first career All-Conference honor. Hanford recorded 28 of her 36 RBI this season against GLVC pitchers.

Hefler earns her fourth-straight All-GLVC honor as an outfielder, owning a team-best .395 batting average, 47 hits, 36 runs and 23 stolen bases heading into this weekend's GLVC Tournament.

Vucsko takes home her third career All-GLVC award at shortstop. The Chicago, Ill., native is batting .388 with a team-best six home runs and a slugging percentage of .612. She is second on the team in batting average, runs (32), hits (45), doubles (6) and RBI (23). Earlier this season, she broke the Lewis career-record for RBI.

Lewis sophomores Kelly Bowler (Lockport, Ill./Lockport), Ali Brems (Kenosha, Wis./Harborside) and Kelsey Ullrich (Winfield, Ill./Wheaton North) each earned All-GLVC East Division Second Team accolades. This is the first All-GLVC selection for all three players.

Bowler, the reigning GLVC Pitcher of the Week, has dominated opposing hitters over the last month. In 12 appearances, Bowler is 9-3 with a 1.18 ERA and 84 strikeouts in 89.1 innings pitched. In all, Bowler is 14-7 with a 1.52 ERA and a team-best 130 strikeouts. She has thrown eight complete-game shutouts, including a 2-0 win over No. 1 Indianapolis on April 27th.

Brems owns a record of 12-7 with 96 strikeouts in 122.2 innings pitched in the circle. In her last nine appearances, Brems is 7-2 with a 2.84 ERA and 59 strikeouts in 61.2 innings pitched.

Ullrich rounds out the All-GLVC Second Team selections for the Flyers at first base. Ullrich batted .267 with a team-best six home runs and 19 RBI.

Indianapolis sophomore outfielder Casey Williamson repeated as GLVC Player of the Year, while UMSL freshman Hannah Perryman was selected as the GLVC Pitcher of the Year. Indianapolis pitcher Morgan Foley was tabbed as the GLVC Freshman of the Year, while her coach Melissa Frost-Fisher earned GLVC Coach of the Year honors.

Lewis opens the 2013 GLVC Softball Tournament on Friday (May 3) against Bellarmine. First pitch is slated for 10 AM at the EastSide Centre in East Peoria, Ill.
