High praise to those who participated in the impressive success of the Christmas Lighting Ceremony on Monday, November 19, turning on Christmas lights on the Lewis campus and caroling together to welcome the coming holidays. Brother Leo Jones, FSC (President’s Office) coordinated the program which was both welcoming and very celebratory, with wonderful musical performances by the Sancta Alberta Choir, directed by Sabrina Poulin (University Ministry) and by Harmonic Uprising. Eric Beltran, guest musician, also performed on the trumpet.
“Once again, the Lighting Ceremony was a delightful occasion with many thousands of Christmas lights being illuminated throughout our splendid campus,” said Brother James Gaffney, FSC, President. “Much appreciation to the Groundskeeping staff and others from Facilities for collaborating in installing the beautiful decorations and the marvelous lighting throughout the campus. Facilities also is to be commended for using environmentally-friendly LED lights in this very fine display,” he said.
Following remarks from Brother James and musical selections, a group of students, including Nataly Toubassi from the Holy Land, turned on the thousands of lights. Those participating in the ceremony with Nataly were Jake Garringer, Jasmine Hester, Alejandra Espitia, Aaron Peska and Joey Preston.
The ceremony was held at the entrance to the Learning Resource Center next to the Christmas crèche. Although the weather was mild for the ceremony, those attending seemed happy to go indoors for a reception with hot chocolate, warm cider, and tasty treats prepared and served by Sodexo staff, as well as additional caroling and camaraderie.
Brother James extended gratitude to all involved in the ceremony with special thanks for the Christmas decorations and lighting to Don Castello, Director of Facilities; Dwight DeVries, Superintendent of Grounds; members of the Lewis University Facilities and Grounds staff, and George Wlodek and the Electrical staff (Facilities). Working behind the scenes to assist with the holiday-inspired celebration were Leigh Bancsy and Carol Wassberg (President’s Office) and Jon Ficaro (Meetings, Conferences and Events). John Kilpatrick and Graduate Assistant Colin Darschewski (Electronic Media) plus Graduate Assistant Joe Glatz (Marketing and Communications) created a video of the ceremony. Thanks to Brother Peter Hannon, FSC, for his photos of the program and lighting installations around campus. Bob Fraser and the Sodexo staff provided holiday-themed refreshments for the several hundred students, staff and faculty who attended the celebration.
