Why can’t I log Into Outlook Web Access?
Effective July 22, 2009, you will have to log into your old email account (http://webmail.lewisu.edu) with your new username and password.
- The default username will be your first name followed by your middle initial and then your last name truncated at 18 characters. For example, if your name is John J Doe, your username is johnjdoe. If your name is Jonathon L. Jacobson-Smith, your username is jonathonljacobsons. If your name is John C Smith and johncsmith is already assigned to another user, your username is johncsmith01.
- The default password is your Lewis University student ID number.

What if I already have a Gmail account?
Your new Google Apps at Lewis University is a separate account that allows you to send and receive email through Gmail (Google email) using your @lewisu.edu email address. Your account provides the benefits of Gmail in an ad-free environment.

Which browsers can I use?
Google recommends that you use Internet Explorer 7 or Firefox 2 in order to access the latest Google features. For more information on the web browsers that Google supports, see the Google website.
Note: Using Safari to access your account will create minor issues. For example, when you log into your Google Apps at Lewis University Gmail account, you won't see the Quick Contacts (chat) box in the left sidebar. If you have a MAC, using the latest version of Firefox will allow you to see the Quick Contacts box in the left sidebar of Google Apps Gmail pages. This display issue only affects Google Apps for Education accounts and not standard Gmail accounts. Google releases features for its commercial Gmail system before it releases features for Google Apps for Education. Google does not provide a list of the different features available in standard accounts and Google Apps for Education.

Why can't I log into my account through the Google site?
Google Apps at Lewis University is Lewis University's installation of the Google Apps for Education software suite, which Google offers to educational institutions and non-profit organizations. Because of account customization and security requirements, users must log in through Lewis University's login portal.

How come my Google Apps at Lewis University account doesn’t have the same applications as my personal Gmail account?
Your account is part of a software suite called Google Apps for Education, which Google offers to educational institutions and non-profit organizations. Google decides which services to include in the Google Apps for Education software suite, and Google Apps for Lewis University has been tailored to fit the needs of the university.

What if I want to use a Google program that is not offered through Google Apps at Lewis University?
If you wish to use a Google program that is not included in Google Apps at Lewis University, such as Google Groups, you can use your personal Gmail account. If you do not have a personal Gmail account, you can sign up for one at www.google.com.

What are the policies that apply to my account?
Your account is subject to the Mass Email Policy. Your account will be subject to Google’s email quota policy, which is currently more than 7 GB (gigabytes). Google does not place limits on how long users can keep email. Your account is also subject to Google’s terms of service and privacy policies.

Can I opt out of my account if I change my mind?
Lewis University email is the official mode of communication as of January 1, 2006. If you stop using your account you will not get important notifications. At this time it is not possible to opt-out of Google Apps at Lewis University.

What is my default password and how do I change it?
Your default password is your Lewis University ID number. For security reasons, it is highly recommended that you change your password to something of your choice. You can change your account password on the ITSO password change page. More Information…

What is Gmail?
Gmail is Google’s email program. Gmail provides more than 7 GB (gigabytes) of email storage and contains features such as integrated chat and phishing protection. For more information, see Google’s Gmail information page.

Will I keep the same email address?
No, you will continue to have an @lewisu.edu email address, but your username will change. The default username will be your first name followed by your middle initial and then your last name truncated at 18 characters. Due to duplication, some usernames may not follow the default naming convention. For example, if your name is John J Doe, your username will be johnjdoe. If your name is Jonathon L. Jacobson-Smith, your username will be jonathonljacobsons. If your name is John C Smith and the username is already assigned to another user, your username will be johncsmith01.

How do I find a faculty/staff e-mail address?
To find a faculty staff e-mail address, do one of the following:
- Go to www.lewisu.edu and under Resources For, click on the Faculty And Staff link.
- Under the Directories section, click on the Faculty/Staff Directory link.
- Search by clicking on Last Name and entering the name of the person you are looking for OR select a department from the Department drop down menu. Click on Get.
- Once the results appear, click on the corresponding Faculty/Staff name to display the e-mail address.
- Write down the email address and enter it into the To, Cc, or Bcc field to send a message. If you email the Faculty/Staff member regularly, you might want to add them to your Contact list.

- Go to http://www.lewisu.edu/welcome/FacStaffDir.htm.
- Search by clicking on Last Name and entering the name of the person you are looking for OR select a department from the Department drop down menu. Click on Get.
- Once the results appear, click on the corresponding Faculty/Staff name to display the e-mail address.

Will I keep the same Blackboard username and password?
You will continue to use your current Blackboard login until around mid-August. ITSO will then send out an email to your Google Gmail account with your new username and password for Blackboard.

What will happen to my old Lewis University email account?
You can continue to login to your old account until December 2009 at which time it will be disabled. However, you must use your new username and password. New messages sent to your old account will be forwarded to your new account until your old account is disabled.

Can I use other email programs to access my account?
Yes. You can access your account using IMAP and mobile email programs. See the links below for more information. When configuring your email program, enter your username in the following format username@lewisu.edu and enter your current password. Once you have configured your email program, you will send and receive email using your @lewisu.edu address.

Can I export my Contacts and Calendar Items from my old email account to my new email account?
It is not possible to export your Contacts or Calendar items from your old account to your new account. You will need to manually enter Contacts and Calendar items in your new account.

How will I control spam?
Your account will be protected from spam by Google’s antispam software. Your messages will be scanned by Lewis University’s antispam software before they are forwarded to your account. ITSO will not forward any message that is tagged as <<SPAM?>>.

Will I keep the same wireless username and password?
You will continue to use your current wireless login until around mid-August. ITSO will then send out an email to your Google Gmail account with your new username and password for the wireless network.

Why do I keep getting a “System Administrator [System Administrator] – Your Mailbox Is Closed” message in my new account when I have 7 GB of storage space?
If your old email mailbox is full, you will receive an automatically generated notification message “System Administrator [System Administrator] – Your Mailbox Is Closed.” Until December 2009, all of your incoming messages to your old email account will be forwarded to your new email address including those messages informing you that you are over your 20MB size limit. To prevent these messages from being forwarded, log in to your old account and clean out your old email messages – purging your Inbox and Deleted items.

How do I share documents with students or others who have Google Apps at Lewis University accounts?
You can share documents with anyone who has a Gmail account by listing the person’s Gmail address in the Share This Document screen. If you enter an email address of someone without a Gmail account in the Share This Document screen, that person will receive an invitation to create a Gmail account.
If you enter an @lewisu.edu email address for someone who does not have a Google Apps at Lewis University account, that person will receive an error message when attempting to view the message. If you wish to share documents with a Lewis University student who does not have a Google Apps at Lewis University account, you must provide a non-Lewis University Gmail email address for that person.
