We have great students in math and computer science at Lewis. They are talented, funny, engaging, deep-thinking, unselfish, generous, and ambitious people. No matter how many frustrations a typical day might bring, the students are my escape. Even on those days when the excrement that is university politics makes it hard to breathe without catching cholera, they make me feel that what I’m trying to do is worth it.
I wanted to give the public a sense of what our department is like, and so I’ve decided to post a letter I sent welcoming our majors back to campus. We are a department driven by its students. I think that makes us unique and helps accomplish great things as an educational enterprise. As long as we keep that focus, I think we’ll continue to grow in quality and enrollment, no matter what obstacles might be put in our way.
