Is It Summer Already?

Thursday, March 29th, 2012

Hello again! It’s hard to believe the only a year ago snow had engulfed the entire campus. 2012 had a different story to tell as record-breaking temperatures have changed the entire face of the university. Lewis has been full of life and everything from sand volleyball to football on the green have got students enjoying the best of the best. The beautiful campus we love so much is in bright colors as flowers are blooming, something I never thought I’d see in March.

Along with this great weather, the Spring sports are kicking off their seasons and the Baseball team is playing quite well in the early going. They have won over 10 games since the season began with 2 of them coming as home wins this past weekend. Peanuts and sunflowers seeds just never tasted so good. Also the Men’s Volleyball team, although losing last night, is ranked #6 in the nation and continues on their run to a potential national championship. It is so exciting!

Big Brothers/ Big Sisters is entering its final weeks of the semester as well and it has been so much fun this year. Getting to play outside on Wednesday afternoons is just what these kids need.

Finally intramurals kicked off its annual kickball tournament and season and has gotten the most attention by students in years. Over 20 teams are competing for the t-shirt and championship poster…Wonder who’s going to win?

Until Next Time…Peace,
Matt

Anticipation!

Wednesday, March 28th, 2012

Hello to all you lovely readers!
I hope you are all doing very well! I cannot believe how fast March is going!
Last weekend was crazy fun due to the Friday’s Spring Formal which was held at the Museum of Science and Industry. Too cool!
Saturday morning we had an open house for our beautiful new science center which went very well. Even I was able to see some of the new lab rooms and the experiments they had displayed. Thank you to all those who worked so hard to accomplish such a great day!
I’ve been busy busy busy, but I’m completely okay with it because I am anticipating this upcoming weekend. I have signed up to go on a retreat called Koinonia! It is a weekend of reflection sharing and fun! I can’t wait! I will share even more by my next blog!
Until then, work hard, keep busy, and enjoy life.

What A Crazy Week!

Friday, March 23rd, 2012

This week has really been one roller coaster of events. I mean, I’m taking a break from my Physics homework and Biochemistry work to sit down with some guacamole and chips to write this blog for our lovely readers! :) But by no means am I complaining; in fact, THANK YOU! You’re saving my sanity :P
This week has been so long for so many reasons. I had a huge midterm for my Analytical Chemistry class (for those of you who don’t know or aren’t science majors, Analytical is basically a General Chemistry class but more in depth and more information), which was 10 long worked problems and 22 multiple choice problems as well. The good thing about this midterm? It was open book AND open notes; the downside is that there really is no reason you shouldn’t get a perfect grade (at least on the multiple choice!! :P )
But the very next day, I went on a field trip with my Biochemistry class to BP’s Naperville campus to see a really cool chemistry instrument in action. The machine is called NMR (nuclear magnetic resonance) and is used in CAT scans and airport security. This field trip gave me a chance to get some real world experience, and to start networking in the industry field. The guy we were with even had us make the samples for him, which was fun for us (again, industry experience!). The machine was SO COOL, and I learned so much, not only about the NMR machine and its functions, but also what it was like to work as a professional chemist in the field. It was so amazing that our professor was connected and able to have us visit this company, which really shows that our professors want us to get connected and make acquaintances so that come graduation and we’re applying for jobs, people will recognize us and realize that we have potential.
Well, I have to get back to my homework and the Jersey Shore reunion :P . Until next time!!! :)

Back to school

Thursday, March 15th, 2012

Well spring break is over. It was a good spring break for me though, I took my dad flying for the first time. He was a lot more nervous than I thought he would be but he really enjoyed it and he even thinks he might take lessons after I graduate. I also took my girlfriend on a flight to Michigan City, which was a great flight. We flew right along the lake shore, and it was a beautiful flight. Other than that, one of my friends invited me to see Jerry Seinfeld’s stand up at the Rosemont Theater. It was a great show and my first time seeing him live. I also slept A LOT over break and that was very nice to catch up on my sleep.

We are pretty much at the half way point for this semester and classes are going great. It looks like it will be one of my best semesters as long as my grades keep up. Some of my classes have proven to be a little boring, but they are Gen Eds and I just have to push through them.

Last off, as far as flying is concerned, I am quickly approaching a stage check which is kind of like a mid term for pilots. After this one, I will be able to fly in the clouds and in low visibility conditions with my instructor. Studying is taking up my life on that one, because half of the exam is on the ground talking about regulations and aircraft systems and the other half is flying.

Talk to you later

Spring has Sprung!

Wednesday, March 14th, 2012

Hello again!
I hope everyone had a fantastic spring break! Although it is now over, it only means we are coming up to Easter break and very soon!
Today was such a glorious day! I can’t believe how beautiful it was and I’m getting really excited for spring to finally come.
I’m also looking forward to campus visit day coming up this Saturday. I hope to see you there!
Have a great week and enjoy this great weather before it starts getting into the rainy season!
Talk to you soon!

Spring Break!!!

Friday, March 2nd, 2012

Well spring break is upon us and it couldn’t come a minute too soon. I have been DRAINED after this past week. from Sunday to Tuesday I wrote 21 pages worth of essays for scholarships and homework essays. It will be very nice to just sleep in and not do anything. Classes are going very well this semester, so far straight As. I just can’t believe that the semester is about half over. I can’t wait until summer, or well even when we get consistent 60 degree weather. I can’t wait to start mountain biking again and running Lewis’s nature trail.

I started volunteering to help Women in Aviation, partially because I have friends in in, but more so that my girlfriend is in it so I “volunteered” to join. Last Friday they held a fundraiser called “Extreme Home Makeover Box Edition.” It was held in the field house and we gathered all of the boxes from the furniture from the new science wing and attendees build their own box forts. It was an all night event but I only stayed until 1. I had work the next day and didn’t want to be completely wiped out.
