Another Exciting Week at Lewis

Monday, February 27th, 2012

So easily one of the most exciting displays of volleyball was performed on February 23, with our very own Lewis Flyers taking on the empowering Ohio State Buckeyes. One thing the Buckeyes didn’t know when they arrived was that they were going to walk away to the sounds of a packed gym chanting, “Start the buses.” That’s right; we won 3 sets to 1, like we did last year at home. Overall, Lewis athletics are putting on a show as the volleyball team continues their winning streak and the men’s basketball team continues on to the conference tournament. In case you didn’t know, I love sports; therefore, I really follow the Lewis athletics programs.

Furthermore, Big Brothers/ Big Sisters program is going great, and this last week the Wolf man came to campus. This guy isn’t really a “real” wolf man, but he did bring with him a real wolf, skunk (deskunked), a porcupine, a coyote, and a woodchuck. My favorite just happened to be the skunk. Just to remind you as well, BB/BS is a mentoring organization where people like me are paired up with children who need guidance in their live between the ages of 7 and 12. It’s awesome.

Lastly, Peer Ministry is going awesome as an NBA 2k 12’ tournament for the XBOX 360 has started and an intramural volleyball team from our dorm is going to be awesome. Wednesday also was the kick-off to Lent and over 700 students and faculty attended Ash Wednesday services…I even joined the choir. But trust me, I’m not the Beatles. Anyway, good luck your college searches and you’ll hear from me soon.

Peace out.

Is Winter Over Yet?

Monday, February 13th, 2012

Hello again! So much has happened in just a few short weeks and the semester is zipping by, inching closer to spring break. Big Brothers/ Big Sisters has started and continues into its 3rd week. The program continues to have great success. For those of you who don’t know what it is all about, each student in the grammar school program is paired up with a Lewis student and one-on-one mentoring continues for about an hour every week. This privately funded organization helps so many kids around the world and the Lewis chapter continues to do the same.

Intramurals continues to have a great impact on the university as 5 v. 5 basketball has come to an end and the great Arena Football league is set to begin on Monday. The games will be played on the basketball courts in the field house in one of the most epic intramural sports the university has to offer.

Overall, classes are going great and I continue to enrich my business horizon. Peer Ministry is also a blast. Happy College Hunting!

Peace.

New Semester, New Challenges

Friday, February 10th, 2012

Hi guys! It’s been a while since the last post, and boy have things changed! I’m loving the new semester, even with all the crazy stuff I have to do. Good news though… The BRAND NEW science center is finally open!!! :D
As a chemistry major, this is probably the most exciting thing to happen to us. The new building is BEAUTIFUL and its environmentally friendly too! The building was made out of recycled materials, has energy efficient systems, occupancy sensors for the rooms, and elements of solar and wind power. It truly demonstrates some of the best parts of science, with “green science” becoming a more prominent field.
The new building has 3 floors, each devoted to a specific major. The top floor is biology, the main floor is chemistry, and the bottom is physics. The professors offices line the glass side of the building, making them easily accessible to the students. There are brand new labs, prep rooms, as well as research labs on each floor, with the labs functioning as well as classrooms. The building is amazing and I love spending most of my days there! :) And most of the incoming students will be able to experience the beauty of this building, regardless of their major. As part of the general education requirements here at Lewis, 2 science courses (including lab!) must be taken. And even though some people may strongly dislike science and all that has to do with it, there are PLENTY of options that students can choose from. (And if you can’t find one, just take in the beauty of the building :P )
And on that note, I have to go finish my lab report for Analytical Chemistry. Until next time! :)

New Semester!

Sunday, February 5th, 2012

Well the Semester has landed, and so far, so good. Classes for this semester are actually going pretty well. Search for Faith ( Theology 100 level gen ed) is actually one of my better classes. I wasn’t very excited to take that class when I was signing up for classes, and it’s kind of a pleasant surprise. For my intro to Philosophy class, I also was not very excited to take it, and so far the class has just consisted of doing yoga. Philosophy was another class that I wasn’t too excited to take, but so far I really like it. I have done yoga in previous classes, and I didn’t like it much at all, but this professor (Dr. Miller) does a real good job instructing it. My body feels good afterwards and I feel relaxed. Beyond that, my other classes are going very well. I have been studying a lot for my Instrument Knowledge Exam, which is a $150 test. It’s pass/fail as far as the FAA is concerned, and I have to get at least a 70% but it really doesn’t look good to future employers is you don’t pass that.

Once again, I will end with the fun stuff, the flying! Instrument is going very well. I moved up to flying the Cessna SP models which are equipped with the Garmin G1000. I know that means a lot to most of you, but I essentially look at a computer screen now instead of analog gauges. I really miss looking outside when I go flying, actually a lot more than I though I would. So I am actually planning on going flying with my uncle (also a pilot) to either Kenosha or Benton Harbor, not really sure and we will have to see what weather permits. Anyway I am going to was my car in the beautiful weather that we are having right now on February 5th. I actually really want to go golfing!!!

Talk to you later
