The Housing Application Process

Thursday, March 24th, 2011

So this week at Lewis the freshman that are going to be sophomores and all of the other upper classman applied for housing for the school year of 2011-2012. This process for many can be a difficult one but if you follow the steps you are given by residence life then the process will be a piece of cake.

The most important thing about the process is to make sure you fill out and complete your housing application and emergency & missing person contact forms. After all of the paper work is done you can start to plan your next years dorm situation.

First of all if you decide you want a certain roommate living with you the next year make sure you have talked with them about where on campus you would like to live. The upper classman dorms available are Cody, Dorothy Day, DeLaSalle North, DeLaSalle South, Fitzpatrick, Mother Teresa, North, Pope John Paul II and Ryan. All of the dorms have both singles and doubles available except DeLaSalle South. All are accommodating and on campus. After deciding who you are going to live with and where you are going at, you have to make sure rooms are available for what you want. You search through an online database that tells all of the rooms available then pick one that suits yourself and your roommate if you are interested in having one. Make sure you register the room under your name, and you are all set with living on campus for the next year!

I have found that living on campus is a great experience, and it really gives you the full effects of college. You meet great people, get involved in many activities and help yourself to be more independent!

Lewis Aviation Career Conferences: Invaluable for Any Aviation Major!

Tuesday, March 22nd, 2011

Interested in getting into the aviation industry? Lewis Aviation Career Conferences are great for anyone thinking of pursuing a career in flight, ATC, maintenance, management, or security. I went when I was still a prospective student, just to see what I was getting myself into. Once there, I got to hear about the aviation industry from real professionals. After hearing them speak about their career, the requirements to get a job, and plenty of useful tips, they were open to questions. The one I went to was specifically about minorities in the industry. It was being covered by FOX news, so I even got to see myself on TV!

I highly recommend these conferences! They are valuable to prospective students because it offers a real perspective on what to expect from the field you’re interested in. Current Lewis students should attend as well because you get to talk to real professionals to learn how to get your foot in the door when looking for a job.

The next conference is April 2, from 9AM to 1PM. If you’re interested you can sign up on the Lewis home page! Happy flying!

Flyer Playground

Saturday, March 19th, 2011

This upcoming weekend at Lewis will be pretty busy! Our baseball, softball, and men’s volleyball team all have home games at some point this weekend if you want come support our teams! Also on Sunday we are hosting Flyer Playground. Flyer Playground is where we invite parents to drop of the children for 3 hours during the day from 12-3. The cost is $5.00 per child and we play games, swim, watch movies, and etc with the children. It is an opportunity for the parents to have some time away and for the kids to have fun and play. The great thing is that the proceeds go to Make-A-Wish foundation, which is a great charity organization.

Also, I would like to note that are that overnight visit opportunity is March 24th-25th. If you are interested I would definitely encourage you sign up. When I was a senior in high school I participated in the overnight visit. It is a really good opportunity to sit in a class and gain an experience on what residence life is all about. You also get to meet a lot of students who might or plan on attending Lewis in the fall.

Hope you all had a good St. Patricks Day!

The New Science Center: Just One of Many Exciting Changes Coming to Lewis

Wednesday, March 9th, 2011

On tour, many people ask about all of the construction going on near the academic building. I’m proud to tell them that it is one of the newest additions to the Lewis campus: the science center. The groundbreaking for this new 80,000 square foot addition happened October 13, 2010. It will contain new laboratories and research centers for students. This $16.1 million dollar project was undertaken in response to a dramatic increase in undergraduate science students over the past five years.

This addition is just one of many exciting planned changes on campus. Some others include a new elevator in the LRC, a new place to eat on the south end of campus, a new football field/athletic arena, restoration of our soccer field/track, and renovation of rooms in the academic building.

This is a very exciting time to be a part of Lewis, and I look forward to seeing these plans come to fruition over time!

“To Kill a DJ”

Tuesday, March 8th, 2011

Starting next week Lewis University Broadcast students like myself will be on WLRA 88.1FM raising money for Advocate Hope Children’s Hospital with the fundraiser called “To Kill a DJ”.

In 1999, Lewis University’s WLRA and Advocate Hope Children’s Hospital in Oak Lawn, Illinois partnered together in order to raise money for the hospital’s Family Assistance Fund. The Fund provides practical assistance to patient families who, through no fault of their own, are suffering severe hardship due to an unexpected illness and either social or economic deprivation. More specifically, the funds go towards paying for such things as critical prescriptions for children, overnight lodging, clothing, and groceries when these items are sorely needed. To raise money, WLRA created the bi-annual event, “To Kill a DJ,” which sees DJs in the program manning a 6 hour non-stop broadcast, with some students going even longer. As of right now, I know that Jodi Steinberg, a Broadcasting studen,t will be going on the air for 80 hours straight, which is an amazing accomplishment! During these hours on the radio us students have raised money for the children’s hospital. I will be on the air at WLRA 88.1FM for “To Kill a DJ” next week on Thursday, March 17 from 6:00pm to 12:00am if anyone is interested in listening.

Lewis University has done a great job working with the children’s hospital over the past years and on January 20, 2010, Lewis University was honored by Hope Children’s Hospital with a plaque on the donor wall for raising over $34,000.

If you would like to donate to the fund, you can do so by writing a comment on my blog or emailing me at shelbytray@lewisu.edu. All donations are tax deductible and greatly appreciated by myself, Lewis University and Advocate Hope Children’s Hospital.

Spring is Coming!

Saturday, March 5th, 2011

Hi Everyone!

I hope you are all having a good week as spring is approaching! We are on spring break so everything on campus slowed down a bit. However, just before break, many exciting news headlines were opened. One thing that you may have heard, the board approved the creation of a new stadium consisting of a 9-lane track and turf field. This plans to be open in the fall! Another exciting thing that we learned is that in April Jason Derulo will be coming to Lewis for a concert. His concert will take place the day before the Spring Formal so it will be a fun weekend at Lewis!

While students are on break from class this week, many of our athletes are still competing. Just this past weekend, both the boys and girls basketball teams had upset wins in the conference tournament to advance. They both play in the next this weekend. Our women’s Track and Field team also captured the conference Indoor Championship this past weekend, for the second year in a row. Men’s and Women’s Tennis and Golf, Softball, and Baseball teams are all in Florida for tournament this week. I wish all of our athletes the best of luck and safety in their tournaments! Go Flyers!!

Have a good week!
