Is It Summer Already?

Thursday, March 29th, 2012

Hello again! It’s hard to believe the only a year ago snow had engulfed the entire campus. 2012 had a different story to tell as record-breaking temperatures have changed the entire face of the university. Lewis has been full of life and everything from sand volleyball to football on the green have got students enjoying the best of the best. The beautiful campus we love so much is in bright colors as flowers are blooming, something I never thought I’d see in March.

Along with this great weather, the Spring sports are kicking off their seasons and the Baseball team is playing quite well in the early going. They have won over 10 games since the season began with 2 of them coming as home wins this past weekend. Peanuts and sunflowers seeds just never tasted so good. Also the Men’s Volleyball team, although losing last night, is ranked #6 in the nation and continues on their run to a potential national championship. It is so exciting!

Big Brothers/ Big Sisters is entering its final weeks of the semester as well and it has been so much fun this year. Getting to play outside on Wednesday afternoons is just what these kids need.

Finally intramurals kicked off its annual kickball tournament and season and has gotten the most attention by students in years. Over 20 teams are competing for the t-shirt and championship poster…Wonder who’s going to win?

Until Next Time…Peace,
Matt

New Semester!

Sunday, February 5th, 2012

Well the Semester has landed, and so far, so good. Classes for this semester are actually going pretty well. Search for Faith ( Theology 100 level gen ed) is actually one of my better classes. I wasn’t very excited to take that class when I was signing up for classes, and it’s kind of a pleasant surprise. For my intro to Philosophy class, I also was not very excited to take it, and so far the class has just consisted of doing yoga. Philosophy was another class that I wasn’t too excited to take, but so far I really like it. I have done yoga in previous classes, and I didn’t like it much at all, but this professor (Dr. Miller) does a real good job instructing it. My body feels good afterwards and I feel relaxed. Beyond that, my other classes are going very well. I have been studying a lot for my Instrument Knowledge Exam, which is a $150 test. It’s pass/fail as far as the FAA is concerned, and I have to get at least a 70% but it really doesn’t look good to future employers is you don’t pass that.

Once again, I will end with the fun stuff, the flying! Instrument is going very well. I moved up to flying the Cessna SP models which are equipped with the Garmin G1000. I know that means a lot to most of you, but I essentially look at a computer screen now instead of analog gauges. I really miss looking outside when I go flying, actually a lot more than I though I would. So I am actually planning on going flying with my uncle (also a pilot) to either Kenosha or Benton Harbor, not really sure and we will have to see what weather permits. Anyway I am going to was my car in the beautiful weather that we are having right now on February 5th. I actually really want to go golfing!!!

Talk to you later

Back on Track

Wednesday, October 12th, 2011

So last weekend was Fall break, and I had the privilege of going back to California (a.k.a. my home state) for a much needed rest from school. Now that I’m back though, I have a lot of work to do. Big Brothers/ Big Sisters is kicking off the semester tomorrow, and I will be paired with a brand new little. I am so excited!

Intramurals are really heating up as well as each team only has 1 regular season game remaining. My team happens to be 4-1, and we cannot wait for the tournament that will define all flag football tournaments. Intramural really are the best.

Last week, I experienced my 2nd semester of the President’s Student Advisory Council (PSAC). Each meeting this group of students hears presentations from Br. James and the other vice presidents about the new changes coming to Lewis. We also discuss in detail new developmental programs or any other items on our agendas. Things at Lewis are growing and I am so excited for all the new additions that will come into effect in the near future. Stay tuned for more updates.

Busy, Busy, Busy

Thursday, September 29th, 2011

Hello again! Week 5 in all my classes is now half way over, and my first exams of the semester are scheduled for the next couple of days. It is exciting to know that once they are over, I got at least another couple of weeks before I have to start preparing again.

Intramural sports are in full swing, and I am currently on a flag football team. We play 6 games sporadically over the next couple weeks and an intense tournament will follow. 2-0 is a pretty good start; hopefully we continue our success. Also, indoor soccer and wiffleball seasons have come to an end. I have much anticipation for the rest of the sports this semester. 3 v. 3 basketball is coming up as well, and although I’m not that good, I have a lot of fun!

Every Wednesday from 3:15 to 5, I will be spending my time in the D’Arcy Great Room mentoring kids (ages 6 to 11) from 2 of the local elementary schools. This program is one of the best organizations I have been involved with and is designed to help kids stay on the right path. Having done this program all last year, we have a huge impact on these kids; it was hard to see them go in the spring.

I am also the Peer Minister in Founders Hall this year. (My job description includes building community in the dorms, journey with others as they grow in faith, and have fun.) My first social of the year is all finished up, and now I’m on to the next one. Since there is at least one Peer Minister in every dorm, we have certain options and requirements for activities/ socials we have to put on in our own assigned dorm.

Finally, as fall break draws nearer, I am excited to be heading back home to San Francisco. I heard the weather has been pretty nice, and it feels like a good time for a visit. Even though it’s only a couple of days, it’s worth every minute.

Until next time!

3 weeks in!

Friday, September 16th, 2011

Hello, my name is Matt Halick and I am currently a sophomore at Lewis University. I am also a Secondary Education/ Mathematics Major. My hometown town is Clayton, California, so I’ve come a long way.

This year, I have the pleasure of telling you all about Lewis! A few of the activities I am involved in are: Peer Ministry, Big Brothers/Big Sisters, President Student Advisory Council, liturgies on Sunday nights, intramurals, and so much more. I feel like I have really gotten to know the school and I’ve come to love everything about it. One of the ways I’ve found that really helped my transition here was my parents actually graduated from Lewis in the mid-70’s. Everytime they come back here to visit I have to take them all around the school and show them everything new that is either being built or some sort of other progress.

Anyway schedules are filling up quickly for the semester, so I’ll keep you updated.

Talk to you again soon.

And So It Begins…Again.

Friday, July 8th, 2011

Well, here we go again!

It’s Wednesday night, and in the morning, we (the OGLs) have yet another First Year SOAR to put on! We have all been getting the work done fast, and preparation has been going quite smoothly. As I sit in my room, I’m thinking about how much fun the next two days are going to be!

Another interesting thing happened the other day. I went to the Bolingbrook Promenade with a few people. While in the store Delia’s (Editors Note: Let it be known Tony was NOT shopping in a girl’s store, but there was a girl present shopping there. Tony, being the gentleman he is, escorted the girl in.), one of the workers commented on my Lewis University t-shirt. I told her I was a student at Lewis, and she told me she would be attending the First Year SOAR in August. It’s crazy how small the world really is!

Well, it’s getting late. I need to get some shut eye for SOAR tomorrow!
