Arts and Ideas is a program at Lewis University to organize unique cultural, artistic, and entertainment events on campus. Founded in 1984 by Br. Paul French and Chester Kondratowicz, Arts and Ideas has grown immensely from offering only a handful of events at its beginning to currently over 100 events each semester. Faculty from virtually every department at Lewis University have participated in presenting programs. Arts and Ideas regularly receives funding from the Illinois Arts Council, the Cultural Advisory Board, and individual and corporate donors. Arts and Ideas Events Just-Peace Symposium: Beyond Partisanship: Exploring Deeply Held Values in the Public Sphere SEP. 4 - Dr. Stephen M. Colecchi, Director, Office of International Justice andPeace, United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, Washington, DC willlead this examination of the bishops’ 2008 election-year document, “FormingConsciences for Faithful Citizenship: A Call for Political Responsibilityfrom the Catholic Bishops of the United States” (November 2007). Dr.Colecchi will explore the proper role of the Church and its officialministers during elections, articulate the principles upon which theChurch's involvement in society is based, and summarize the bishops'guidance to Catholics in an election year. He will also briefly review thespecific issues of concern to Church leaders in this election. Dr. LauretteLiesen, Associate Professor of Political Science and Director of Social andCommunity Studies, will respond.This pre-symposium colloquium is the first major event in the Center forMinistry and Spirituality’s symposium on faith, values and internationalpolitics, “Called to Live Justly: Shaping a Just Peacebuilding Agenda.” Thisinterdisciplinary and interfaith symposium, which is free and open to thepublic, aims to enable students, faculty, staff and the community todialogue about what religious and philosophical values add to citizendiscernment about the United States' future international role. Speakers andparticipants will attempt to critique and update the U.S. Catholicbishops’peacemaking agenda proposed in "The Harvest of Justice Is Sown inPeace"(1993), the tenth anniversary reflection on their historic peacepastoral. The symposium will feature: four principal lectures, three days ofpeacebuilding Focus Sessions by scholars and activists, colloquia onfaithful citizenship and moral obligation in Iraq, interfaith prayer, and ahearing by religious leaders of scholars and activists on priorityrecommendations to the new President and next Congress for an American justpeacebuilding agenda.
