Admission Process

Freshman (First Year) Applicant Requirements

Lewis University bases it admission decisions on a combination of factors including grade point average, class rank, ACT or SAT scores, and accumulation of specific high school units. A strong academic record, evidence of the ability to do college level work and benefit from it, enthusiasm, and the desire to succeed are all considered in the admissions decision.

Students applying to Lewis University as freshmen must meet the following requirements:

  • Applicants must be a graduate of an approved high school with a combined grade point average; class rank, and ACT or SAT score which indicate a strong likelihood of success in university studies.

  •     ACT

  • The applicant must have accumulated 18 high school units. Three of those units should be in English and the remaining 15 should be college preparatory in nature.

  • Applicants for admission must complete the Admission Application and have their high school forward a copy of the student transcripts. Students must also have their ACT or SAT scores sent to the Undergraduate Admission Office. Veterans must submit a DD214 Form. For additional admission requirements for Nursing Students read below.

  • By Illinois State law, all incoming students born after January 1, 1957 taking 6 or more credit hours per semester must have an updated immunization record sent to University Health Services. This requirement refers to students receiving credit on the Romeoville campus.

Success Program

Each year the Success Program Committee accepts a limited number of freshmen students who do not meet the University's standard admission requirements but exhibit strong potential and desire to complete a bachelor's degree.

The Success Program is comprised of a full year of meetings and activities with individual attention focused on improving the student's academic skills. Comprehensive counseling and support services are provided by the Success Program in an effort to help students recognize and reach their academic potential. Counselor's serve as both academic advisor and coordinator where student progress is reviewed in required weekly meetings. Services include:

  • Peer Mentoring
  • Tutoring
  • Career Orientation
  • Multi-purpose workshops
  • Bi-weekly contact with Success Program coordinator/counselor
  • On-going follow-up with faculty

Prior to beginning their first semester, Success Program students are required to attend a two-week Summer Bridge Program. During their first semester the academic focus will center on enrollment in the required writing and reading courses. The student's schedule will contain other University courses as well. In the second semester the students and counselors will again decide on a schedule of courses to be pursued.

Writing Competency Requirements

All students are required to take the written placement exam administered prior to registration. Based on those results, students will be placed in the appropriate level of composition relative to their demonstrated skills. This includes freshmen, transfer, and students presenting Advanced Placement (AP) or College Level Examination Program (CLEP) scores for consideration. Undergraduate students must demonstrate their competency by passing the College Writing I and II courses or equivalents. Students interested in AP or CLEP testing should contact the Center for Academic and Career Services for information regarding test dates and times.

The College Writing I and II classes are required general education courses that focus on the principles of sound research, organization, analysis, argument, and evaluation used in writing effective and competent papers. These course requirements should be satisfied during the first or second semester of attendance at Lewis University.

Qualified students presenting AP or CLEP scores may have course work on College Writing I waived or have three semester credit hours granted. To be considered for those options, a completed application form and supporting materials must be submitted to the English Department. Test scores and supporting documentation must also be presented to Chair of the English Department during the student's first semester at Lewis University. Students should allow a minimum of six-eight weeks for the processing of scores and materials.

Nursing Students Additional Admission Requirements

For admissions into the College of Nursing and Health Professions, student must meet several additional requirements:

  • It is strongly recommended that Nursing freshmen applicants have completed 1 year of high school chemistry and 2 years of high school mathematics at a grade of "C" of above.

  • Freshmen applicants need a minimum ACT composite score of 20 or higher for direct admission as a nursing major. Applicants with a lower ACT composite score may choose an Arts an Sciences "Undeclared" major and enroll in prerequisite nursing course work. The student must then complete at least one full-time semester of prerequisite courses and achieve a cumulative GPA of 2.75 before declaring a major in nursing. (Note: The prerequisite courses take a minimum of three full-time semesters to complete before starting any nursing clinical coursework.)

  • All directly admitted nursing majors and undeclared nursing students must take the Nursing Entrance Test before starting any nursing clinical coursework. Students are encouraged to take the NET the summer before enrolling at Lewis or during the freshman year in order to complete any additional coursework that may be needed before the sophomore year.

  • Every College of Nursing and Health Professions student must complete a physical examination form and the required immunizations (some of which are in addition to those required by Illinois law) before being eligible for clinical courses.

  • Prior to entering clinical courses, every pre-licensure nursing student must complete a disclosure form; similar to the disclosure required by the Illinois Department of Professional Regulations in the application for licensure as a RN.
