Pre-Physician's AssistantOverviewThe field of Physician Assistant (P.A.) is a relatively new health profession, with the first program pioneered in 1965 at Duke University Medical Center. As the title implies, P.A.s practice medicine under the supervision of a physician – though the extent of the physician oversight varies from state to state, as it is dependent upon state law. More than 130 accredited P.A. programs exist with the vast majority offering the master’s degree. Upon completion of the advanced degree (and, sometimes, additional residency periods), the P.A. can practice in almost any specialty available to the Allopathic or Osteopathic graduate. |
