Optometry is a specialized health profession that focuses primarily on vision care. Optometrists diagnose eye diseases and vision problems as well as prescribe drugs, eyeglasses, and contact lenses. To obtain licensure in the field of optometry, a Doctor of Optometry (O.D.) degree must be earned from an accredited program in addition to passing the clinical State board and written exam (where applicable). Currently, there are 17 schools of optometry in the U.S. at which the student can complete his/her studies.
