Pre-Medicine

Overview

When a student declares a major in the Biological Sciences with an intent to advance to medical school, he/she should realized that there are two different types of professional programs, Allopathic and Osteopathic Medicine, to which the student may choose to apply. The Allopath, who receives an M.D. (Medical Doctor) at the end of his/her training, will have the same potential career outlook as the graduate of an Osteopathic program where the D.O. (Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine) degree is awarded. During the undergraduate career, each student should carefully consider his/her options and consider which programmatic philosophy is most similar to his/her own.

Lewis University alumni include both practicing M.D.s and D.O.s who remain in contact with the faculty and, when possible, offer “advising sessions” to undergraduates.
