President’s Message - Fall 2007

As we end our chapter’s 25th Anniversary year, its time to look back at all the accomplishments that were met and all the new goals we have set for our Epsilon Upsilon chapter. Reflecting on the 2006-7 academic year, several educational presentations were sponsored/cosponsored by our chapter. Our spring induction included 54 inductees from across the undergraduate and graduate level programs. The programming for this fall has already included a well attended Northwestern University presentation on Bipolar Disorder and the ever growing Evidence Based Practice Nursing Fair at Edward Hospital. With an active membership of over 300 strong, it is often difficult to meet the needs of all members. Topics for meetings, dates/times/locations for events, communication, etc are all areas that the chapter board tries to address. We encourage feedback from current members, active or inactive, as to the best ways to meet the needs of our membership, and community as a whole. One goal we are working on is engaging new members in active membership, retaining members and inviting inactive members back to an active role.

Communication with a busy, often mobile, membership base continues to be an obstacle that the chapter is faced with. Although email is often the most expedient and cost-effective method, we understand that all members may not have access to email or our database of email addresses is not current. We encourage members to check their contact information on the STTI website, www.nursingsociety.org, and also let our chapter secretary know of any changes.

With the biennial STTI convention being held in November, 2007, we invite you to check the STTI website and chapter newsletters for any bylaw changes that may occur. The international contingency that attends the convention reminds us of the global vision of the honor society. Vision 2020 states that “by the year 2020, the Honor Society of Nursing, Sigma Theta Tau International, will be the organization of choice for scholarship, knowledge and leadership for nurses globally.” We invite all of you to help us grow that vision right here at our local level. Become a member, be active and be a voice for the power of nursing. Here’s to the next successful 25 years of the Epsilon Upsilon Chapter of Sigma Theta Tau!
