Importance of Information Security

The Internet is a vast interconnection of smaller networks. These smaller networks range from extremely secure to not secure at all. However, the Internet is just one big network, which suggests that, even the most secure networks, by virture of their association with their less steely peers, are weakened and prone to attack. And the stakes are huge. The Internet is a lifeblood for commerce both in the United States and abroad. It is the conduit for information services, for transportation systems, for healthcare systems, for controlling society's critical infrastructure.

As the barrier to hacking the Internet has been lowered by a proliferation of easy-to-use tools and free and open how-to discussions, the number of people aiming to bring down this essential asset, both in this country and abroad, has grown tremendously from the days when the hacker crowd was an elite group reveling in the secret lessons of an unapproachable discipline. The challenges are great, and so is the need for qualified people to meet them.
