Careers in Information Security

Information security is an issue that has captured the world's attention like few other high-tech fields. The reason for this intense interest is how deeply invested virtually all people are in the safety and integrity of the Internet. The heightened awareness of the need for information security and the realization that, when things go wrong, they can go really wrong has translated into plenty of career opportunities for those interested in the field.

Security professionals find positions in virtually all sectors of business. They often work as part of information technology staffs at financial, engineering, healthcare, and educational institutions. Increasingly, they are being hired as analysts for government defense agencies and law enforcement. Some work as consultants, contracting their expertise to companies that don't have sufficient expertise on-staff. While outsourcing and offshoring of computer technology jobs has been a concern the past few years, many feel that the emigration of security responsibilities is far more contentious, and the pace of outsourcing such jobs has been much slower. As new vulnerabilities are found and the stakes increase, security professionals should continue to benefit from a wealth of career opportunities.
