Highlights
- Lewis' history department takes a global and interdisciplinary approach, with courses in African, Asian, European, Central and South American, and United States history. Plus, additional courses in special topics such as the History of Science, the History of Ideas, the History of Women, the History of Religious Thought and the History of Revolutions.
- Lewis University's Department of History upholds Lasallian values and the Lewis Mission. Students gain knowledge of historic events and ideas, and develop wisdom through a deeper understanding of human experience.
- The history department also offers the General Education class titled Culture and Civilization, a requirement for the Lewis University bachelor of arts degree. This two-semester, interdisciplinary course studies the development of global cultures and civilizations, through the stories of great persons, events, ideas and achievements. Lewis students graduate with a well-rounded knowledge of the past, and a deeper understanding of world events.
- The history department now offers a track in Public History as a special focus for history majors. Public Historians work with museum and national heritage sites, a growing field with great job opportunities.
- Future history teachers get the foundation they need at Lewis, through collaboration between the Department of History and the College of Education.
- The History Program prepares candidates to teach in grades 6-12 in public and private schools in the State of Illinois. The program is approved by the State Teacher Certification Board in conjunction with the Illinois State Board of Education and includes all of the requirements for a major in History as well as general social studies core courses and Illinois history. Teacher education candidates major in both History and Secondary Education.
