What campus do you offer the MA Secondary Education program?
The program is offered at our Romeoville campus.

What grades will I be able to teach when I complete your program?
Secondary Certification includes an Illinois Type 09. You will be able to teach grades 6-12 in your certified content area.

What areas do you certify in?
We certify in the areas of: English/language arts; mathematics; science with designations in biology, chemistry or physics; and social science with designations in history or psychology.

Do you require the GRE?
No. However, we do require the Illinois Basic Skills Test and the Graduate Writing Exam.

The Illinois Basic Skills Test must be taken and passed before you can begin any “methods” classes. You may however complete content area classes before the BST. Please keep in mind that the BST is not offered every month and that it takes approximately one month for your score report to be returned. You can learn more about the Illinois Basic Skills Test at www.icts.nesinc.com.

The Graduate Writing Exam is offered through the Lewis University College of Education. The Secondary Education departmental secretary can assist you with the next test date. You can complete the Graduate Writing Exam during your first semester at Lewis University.

Do I have to begin the degree a certain semester?
No. We offer rolling admission into the program, so you may start in the fall or spring semesters.

When are classes offered?
They are offered all three semesters—fall, spring and summer. Evening classes begin at 5:00pm.

How do I get started?
Contact the Secondary Education departmental secretary at (815) 836-5880 to request a transcript evaluation in the content area you would like to teach.
