Lady Ilena - Origins of the Project

Lewis University students (pictured below) from the College of Education read The Legend of Lady Ilena during the Fall 2004 semester as a requirement of their Children and Adolescent Literature course. They discovered this wonderful novel which was written by a local author, Patricia Malone. Lewis University had the pleasure of hosting a visit from Ms. Malone, and was pleased to sponsor students from the San Miguel Schools in Chicago to join in the excitement of the evening. It was truly a very special evening. All students had the opportunity to meet with the author and have their copies of Legend of Lady Ilena signed. It was inspiring to hear Ms. Malone’s stories about the dedication and hard work that went into writing this book. The pre-service teachers in attendance will bring the memories of this evening into their teaching careers. The students from San Miguel Schools will most likely remember this field trip long into their adult lives!

As a tribute to Ms. Malone, the students from The College of Education created this Web site under the direction of Dr. Jeanette Mines, Dean of the College of Education who also taught the Literature course. Special thanks goes out to Dr. Deb Augsburger and Dr. Nancy Kennedy for coordinating Ms. Malone’s visit, and Esther Arunthavanathan, Eric Hoffman and Eileen Ramsay (Chief Editor) for editing the web pages.
