Developing Learning Communities: Our Educational Philosophy

John Baptist de La Salle, the Patron Saint of Educators, encouraged teachers to "touch the hearts" of their students. The famous educational reformer John Dewey College Of Education believed that the school is the primary vehicle of social progress. We wholeheartedly agree on both counts. That is why we are so passionate about instilling passion in our educators, including a love for the disenfranchised, a belief in touching hearts, and the desire to pass down a legacy of lifelong learning.

To encourage this, we work tirelessly to develop learning communities, so that our students, faculty and local school personnel will all value diverse perspectives, collaborative decision-making and interactive learning experiences. Through a culture of critique, possibility and inquiry, Lewis students prepare to become:
  • KNOWLEDGEABLE CRITICAL TRANSFORMATIVE EDUCATORS
    • This includes professional and pedagogical knowledge, the ability to integrate technology into teaching, and the effective assessment of student learning - all while creating positive environments for student transformation
  • MULTICULTURAL EDUCATORS
    • This includes the ability to recognize personal biases, understand the cultural issues involved in appropriate student learning assessment, and how to adapt instruction for all students
  • SOCIAL JUSTICE ADVOCATES
    • This includes the ability to challenge dominant discourse and understand institutional inequities, the belief that all students can learn, and the ability to bring about change

Field Placements: Where Theory Meets Practice

As a Lewis student, we partner your theoretical training with hands-on experiences in a variety of in-class settings. In fact, over the past three years, we have partnered with 60 school districts, 7 counties and 130 schools - providing Lewis students with a wide variety of clinical, student teaching, intern and practicum placement opportunities, and exposure to all different kinds of programs, students, cultures and learning styles.

Learning Convenience and Flexibility

All programs are offered on our main campus in Romeoville. Plus, select graduate programs are offered at our Tinley Park, Shorewood and Chicago campuses as well as suburban school districts for the convenience of working adults. Many of our graduates choose to participate with a group environment through our convenient 1-day a week cohort programs.

We are constantly updating our programs to keep our students on the cutting edge of educational trends - all to support our goal of being the Midwest leader in developing transformative educators and preparing them with practical values-oriented education. In fact, with committed faculty, small class sizes and a personalized learning environment, Lewis is quickly becoming the most popular choice in Illinois for teachers to come and learn.
