FAQs: Admission Standards
- Why is a minimum composite ACT set for admission to the Biology (Pre-
professional) Program ?
The National Science Teachers Association (NSTA) conducted a study that
concluded that in order for a student to perform at a “C” level
in a freshman Biology major course, a minimum composite ACT of 24 is
required. If you were to be admitted to the Biology program and performed
at a D or F level, this would most likely result in the loss of scholarships
and perhaps the end of your collegiate career at Lewis University.
-
What are the minimum requirements for admission to the programs in
the
Biology Department?
For the 2007-2008 academic year, the minimum composite ACT score for
entrance into the Biology B.A. or B.S. program* will be 21, which
is not as stringent as the NSTA recommendations. Admission to the preprofessional
and allied health programs requires a minimum composite ACT of 23,
while the requirements for application to the Pharmacy Dual Admission
program are a minimum composite ACT score of 25 and a 3.2/4.0 GPA .
(Realize that admission to the Pharmacy Dual Admission Program is the
decision of Midwestern University and not Lewis University.)
-
Can I become a Biology major after I enter Lewis University?
After you have been a student at Lewis University for one year, you
may petition
for acceptance into the Biology Department. In order to be considered
for admission into any Biology Program*, you need to have taken mathematics
courses through Calculus I (minimum grade of C) and have maintained a
minimum composite GPA of 3.25. All of the coursework must be above the100
level and taken at Lewis University.
*Besides the Biology B.A. and B.S. degrees, all of the preprofessional
programs (including the Nuclear Medicine Technology, Radiation Therapy,
Diagnostic Medical Sonography, Vascular Ultrasound programs), and Environmental
Science programs are considered as being majors within the Biology Department
and are subject to these guidelines.
