Department of Aviation - Bachelor of Science in Aviation Security

Since the dramatic events of September 11, 2001, progress has been made in the area of aviation security. Airports, airlines, related organizations and individual pilots and other personnel have worked with the Transportation Safety Administration (TSA), the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), the Department of Defense and other entities to enhance aviation security while preserving passenger rights and comfort. Aviation security, however, continues to be a national concern. This new program trains professionals to protect air transportation centers, passengers and cargo.

Lewis University is in a unique position to respond to this challenge. Two of its highly regarded and largest departments are Aviation and Justice, Law and Public Safety Studies (JLPSS). The proposed major includes a combination of selected Aviation and JLPSS courses and designated general education courses in American government, hazardous materials and forensic chemistry.

The aviation security major focuses on understanding: (1) aviation, airports and air travel well enough to know where security issues, including terrorism, are likely to arise; (2) the laws, policies, procedures and systems that impact response to security issues; and (3) best practices for insuring security and responding to security concerns in aviation.
