Podiatry is a branch of medicine devoted to the study of human movement, with care of the foot and ankle as its primary focus. The analogy can be made that podiatrists are to the extremities what opthlamologists are to the eyes or dentists to the mouth. Students should view this as a highly specialized area of medicine with increasing career opportunities. To become a podiatrist a student must first take all pre-requisite coursework in Natural Sciences and Mathematics as well as have a diverse “liberal arts” background. Application is then made to a Podiatric program and, if the student is admitted, he/she will attend four years beyond the undergraduate experience. Persons successfully completing professional school requirements will be awarded the D.P.M. (Doctor of Podiatric Medicine) degree.
